CBR has an exclusive first look at Spider-Man‘s upcoming new costume, which draws inspiration from Japanese culture and Super Sentai.
The new Spider-Man look is for Takuya Yamashiro’s Spider-Man, the star of Toei’s Japanese Spider-Man television series. Takuya will appear in the Spider-Verse vs. Venomverse limited series from Mat Groom, Kyle Higgins and Luciano Vecchio. Spinning out of two Spider-Man one-shots, Web of Spider-Verse: New Blood and Web of Venomverse: Fresh Brains, the five-issue event sees a wide range of Spider-Verse characters fighting in what is being called the “ultimate arachnid war”.

Bane Co-Creator Rips Into Absolute Villain Version (& Takes Down Tom Hardy In the Process)
Bane co-creator Graham Nolan is not impressed with the character’s new Absolute Universe design…and he labels Tom Hardy’s version a “fail”.
“In the story, a new costume for Takuya is introduced, and it helps setting him visually apart from Peter,” Vecchio told CBR. “I rewatched episodes and clips of the Japanese Spider-Man show to tap into that universe’s sensitivity and dramatic body language, and also referred to other early 80s shows in the Tokusatsu genre for aesthetic cues like the scarf and black lenses. I bounced ideas and references with writer Mat Groom before landing on this visual that can be shortened to Spider-Man meets Super Sentai.”
Takuya’s new costume can be seen on the cover art for Spider-Verse vs. Venomverse #3, which is on sale in July. CBR also has Vecchio’s costume design sheet, which shows Takuya’s outfit from multiple angles, including an umasked version which gives a clear look at the character’s face.
In the Japanese television series, Takuya’s Spider-Man outfit is typically identical to Peter Parker’s, but the two characters differed in one unique way: Takuya piloted a giant mecha Leopardon to fight the show’s monsters. It remains to be seen if the mecha will make an appearance in the comics.
In addition to Takuya’s new look, CBR can also exclusively reveal a look at the inside of Spider-Verse vs. Venomverse #2. The pages show Spider-Man and Venom leading the charge for their respective sides of the war, swinging into battle as their allies join the fray.
