This article contains spoilers for a number of recent plot developments for Spider-Woman in Marvel Comics

In the wake of the attempted assassination of Tombstone at the wedding of his daughter to Randy Robertson in Amazing Spider-Man #31, the super-criminals of New York City have gone to war with each other. That is the setup for the Gang War crossover that runs throughout the Spider-Man related titles in November and December (and into 2024), and one of the series launching out of the crossover is a brand-new Spider-Woman series that graduated to an ongoing series after it was originally announced as “just” a tie-in miniseries for the length of the Gang War crossover.

In an exclusive reveal to CBR, Marvel shared the cover and solicitation for December’s Spider-Woman #2.

SPIDER-WOMAN GOES TO WAR…

…against the GANG WAR tearing through New York. On the trail of the ruthless DIAMONDBACK and his mysterious backers, Jess commits a little corporate espionage, which may bury her in a dark corner of her past. Plus, the shadowy GREEN MAMBA prowls for a rematch Spider-Woman may not be ready for!

In the most Spider-Verse storyline in the pages of Dan Slott and Mark Bagley’s Spider-Man series, Spider-Woman was stabbed by a possessed Spider-Man: Noir, which untethered her from the Web of Life and Destiny. This didn’t just kill her, but literally remove her from reality entirely. At the end of the series, she was brought back to life and existence, but in the process, some things have obviously changed for Jessica Drew.

In Amazing Spider-Man #31, we learned that upon her return to existence, Jessica’s son, Gerry Drew, is now missing, and it is unclear whether he has been “only” kidnapped or whether Jessica’s son was erased from continuity when Spider-Woman was untethered, and if that is the case, then when she returned to existence, did Gerry NOT come back? As you might imagine, that is a major problem for Spider-Woman as she adjusts to her return to superheroing, but she won’t be able to dwell on it that long as she is now pulled into the Gang War crossover.

When the ongoing series was announced, writer Steve Foxe explained his thoughts about the series, and Jessica Drew in general, “Jessica Drew has been my favorite Marvel heroine since I was a kid. From the instantly classic costume to her complex backstory, there’s just SO much to her. She’s a spy, a street-smart detective, a superheroic best friend, an Avenger, a Spider-Verse-hopper, a mother, and a survivor. Getting the chance to do it alongside Carola, as well as Eric Koda on our prologue [in Amazing Spider-Man #31], has been bioelectric heaven. The events of Gang War ended up being the perfect springboard for a story that embraces what Zeb [Wells] and co. are doing in Amazing Spider-Man while also telling a distinctly Spider-Woman saga–with lasting ramifications for some of her closest relationships–in her own book. Few characters have been through Hell like Jessica Drew has been through Hell, and I’m so excited to throw EVEN MORE at her.”

Spider-Woman #2 is due to be released in December.
