Kraven the Hunter—a Marvel Comics villain from the Spider-Man Universe—is new in theaters. Is there a post-credits scene and if so, what does it tell us?

Directed by J.C. Chandor, Kraven the Hunter opens in theaters nationwide on Friday. Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars in the title role in Kraven the Hunter, while Russell Crowe plays Kraven’s father, Nikolai Kravinoff.

The logline for Kraven the Hunter reads, “Kraven’s complex relationship with his ruthless father, Nikolai Kravinoff, starts him down a path of vengeance with brutal consequences, motivating him to become not only the greatest hunter in the world but also one of its most feared.”

Kraven the Hunter also stars Ariana DeBose, Fred Herchinger and Christopher Abbott. Alessandro Nivola also stars as the film’s main villain, Aleksei Sytsevich, aka Rhino.

Rated R, Kraven the Hunter marks the third film in 2024 featuring characters from Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Spider-Man Universe.

In February, Sony—through its subsidiary Columbia Pictures—released Madame Web starring Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney, and in late October released Venom: The Last Dance, which is the third film in the Venom trilogy starring Tom Hardy.

Note: Mild spoilers from Kraven the Hunter are addressed in the next section.

Do Kraven The Hunter’s End Credits Tell Us Anything?

Generally, end credits and/or post-credits scenes serve one of two functions. Either they wrap up loose ends from a scene earlier in the movie or they tease a sequel in the works.

Including a post-credits scene has become a standard practice with Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe, generally to set up the next chapter in the MCU. After that, DC’s and Sony Marvel’s superhero films—the latter owns the film rights to Spider-Man and characters within his comic book universe—started to follow suit.

Sony’s last Spider-Man Universe film, Venom: The Last Dance, included both an end credits and post-credits scene, even though the film has been widely reported as Tom Hardy’s last Venom solo film.

Kraven the Hunter, however, got the short shrift since the film does not have a post-credits scene. It all makes sense, given the report of a tricky situation involving Sony’s comic book movies that was published earlier in the week.

On Tuesday, The Wrap claimed that Sony is done producing films about everyone but Spider-Man in the Spider-Man universe. So in short, that means no more solo films, at least, for Venom, Madame Web, Morbius and Kraven.

The news no doubt comes at a bad time for the cast members of Kraven the Hunter—chief among them Aaron Taylor-Johnson, whose final scene in the film suggests that there’s more ahead for the character. In addition, there’s a set-up for another villain at the conclusion of Kraven the Hunter, who won’t be named here for spoiler purposes.

The characters in Kraven the Hunter can hold onto one shred of hope, however. Thanks to Sony Marvel’s deal with Disney to bring Spider-Man into the MCU, it is conceivable that fans could see any of Spider-Man’s ancillary characters in a future film featuring the webslinger.

Right now, though, the only character that seems to have a chance of appearing in a future Spider-Man film is Venom, who previously appeared in the end credits of Sony-distributed MCU extravaganza Spider-Man No Way Home.

True, Tom Hardy may be done playing the character in Venom solo films, but there’s nothing stopping him from being a supporting character in a future Spider-Man/MCU movie. Plus, it helps that all three films in the Venom trilogy have been hits, something that Morbius and Madame Web were not.

Even if Kraven the Hunter is a hit, Sony and Disney have another problem on their hands since Taylor-Johnson previously played Pietro Maximoff—aka Quick Silver—in the MCU’s Avengers: Age of Ultron.

And while the twin sibling of Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen)—aka Scarlet Witch—perished in Age of Ultron, it may seem awkward to bring Taylor-Johnson into the MCU via a Spider-Man movie.

Rated R, Kraven the Hunter opens in theaters nationwide on Friday.
