Warning: contains spoilers for Doctor Strange of Asgard #1!
Doctor Doom is not the next Thanos, and Marvel wants you to know why. Doctor Doom will soon make his MCU debut, serving as the “big bad” for the Multiverse Saga, just as Thanos was the driving force behind the Infinity storyline. Doom is one of comics’ premiere villains, and in Doctor Strange of Asgard #1, Marvel lays out why he is not the next Thanos.
Doctor Strange of Asgard #1 is written by Derek Landy and drawn by Carlos Magno. Doctor Strange, who a few months prior vacated the title of Sorcerer Supreme to Doctor Doom, is seeking new sources of power, a journey that brings him to Asgard. Strange discusses his situation with Thor, who tells the former Sorcerer Supreme that his half-brother Loki shares one trait in common with Doctor Doom: both “hide behind the trickery of words.” Thor concedes this makes them more difficult to defeat, and the heroes must work harder to do so.
Doctor Doom Does Indeed Have a Way With Words
Doctor Doom Has Finally Realized His Grand Ambition: to Conquer the World
Thor’s assessment of Doctor Doom’s modus operandi is correct, and the events of the recently concluded Blood Hunt event prove it. Doctor Strange, seeking help in stopping a vampire invasion, went to Doctor Doom. Doom agreed to help, but only if Strange conceded the title of Sorcerer Supreme. While Doctor Strange held up his end of the bargain, Doom once again resorted to trickery. Yet by the time Strange realized what had happened, it was too late: Doctor Doom, a perennial runner-up for Sorcerer Supreme, now had the title–and there was no telling what might come next.
That turned out to be One World Under Doom, a major, line-wide event of which Doctor Strange of Asgard is part of. Doom possesses a keen scientific mind, and when this was coupled with his newfound magical powers, it was only a matter of time before he made his move. This turned out to be a (largely) bloodless coup of every nation on Earth. On the surface, Doom’s offer to the world was irresistible: he promised free healthcare and education to all, as well as genuine world peace. All Doom asked was unquestioning loyalty–a huge tradeoff.
The Infinity Gauntlet was written by Thanos’ creator: Jim Starlin.
Doom’s ambitions, as seen in the first month of One World Under Doom, already distinguish him from Thanos. In the comics, Thanos assembled the Infinity Gauntlet and slaughtered half the universe’s population, just to impress Death. While the MCU tweaked the Mad Titan’s motivations, the end result was still the same. Doctor Doom, unlike Thanos, possesses a code of honor, however twisted it may be, and it would not lead him to do something so over the top. Doom, while fascinated by the Gauntlet, helped Earth’s heroes oppose Thanos’ schemes, as seen in The Infinity Gauntlet.

What truly separates Doctor Doom from Thanos are their internal psychological issues. Thanos, for all his great power and clever schemes, has problems with his self-esteem, and smart opponents use these issues against him. In The Infinity Gauntlet, Thanos’ defeat was two-fold: in his hubris, he allowed Nebula to steal the Gauntlet, and reverse the damage he did. With Thanos radically depowered, Adam Warlock then used pure psychology against the Mad Titan, breaking down his internal defenses and ultimately convincing Thanos to stop his quest. It is ironic that a being as powerful as Thanos can be injured by words.
Doctor Doom would see through Thanos’ hard exterior, see the Mad Titan’s love for Death, and find a way to use that to his advantage.
And, as Thor notes, Doctor Doom has a way with words. Doom was able to easily bamboozle Doctor Strange and usurp his title. Thanos may prove a little harder to trick, but Doom will catch on eventually. Doctor Doom would see through Thanos’ hard exterior, see the Mad Titan’s love for Death, and find a way to use that to his advantage. Any fight between Thanos and Doctor Doom is sure to be epic, but the Latverian dictator would prevail, thanks to his way with words and keen grasp of psychology.
