Warning: Contains SPOILERS for The Amazing Spider-Man #65.DEATHS! Phil Coulson recently returned from the grave in Marvel Comics continuity, though that isn’t to say he’s escaped death – far from it, in fact. Indeed, Coulson has literally become Death after bonding with the newly-created Death Stone. Ever since then, Coulson has wondered why he was chosen by the Death Stone. And now, it seems he’s finally found out why: to be Spider-Man’s new mentor.
In a preview for The Amazing Spider-Man #65.DEATHS by Derek Landy and Kev Walker, Peter Parker has decided to give up being Spider-Man – permanently. The reason he made this drastic decision is due to the added task he was given by the Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Doom. At the start of this story arc, Doom chooses Spider-Man to be his replacement as the Earth’s champion against the Eight Scions of Cyttorak. Basically, Spider-Man has to defend the mortal realm from a demon-god and his followers, and after his most recent mission, it’s all become far too much.
Doctor Strange, who knows how important being Earth’s champion is, tries to convince Peter not to give up. However, while fighting the Eight Scions, Spider-Man was forced to bear witness to – and fully experience – hundreds of thousands of deaths all at once. These are forces of immense cosmic horror he’s meddling with, and Peter realized that he doesn’t have what it takes to face them. But, the job must be done, and Spider-Man was chosen to do it. So, Doctor Strange turns to the one person who would actually know how Peter feels to help him: Phil Coulson.
Phil Coulson is the Perfect Mentor for Peter Parker (& Not Just Because He’s Death)
Coulson Famously Loves Superheroes, & Will Do Whatever It Takes to Help Them
Phil Coulson is uniquely qualified to help Peter Parker through this difficult time, as he knows what it’s like to experience death on such a large scale. However, just because Coulson is Death doesn’t mean that’s all he can offer Spider-Man as his potential mentor. As established in both Marvel Comics and the MCU, Phil Coulson absolutely loves superheroes. He firmly believes that heroes make the world a better place, and he’s also long-accepted that he’ll never really be one of them, but he’ll do everything in his power to help them however he can.
If Phil Coulson commits himself to being Peter Parker’s mentor, then he’ll give it everything he’s got without wavering even for an instant. This preview even makes a point to say that Phil Coulson is the ultimate fan of superheroes, implying that that’s why he’ll be the best mentor Peter could hope to have. Plus, as previously mentioned, his position as the living embodiment of Death will help Peter get through this current struggle, making Coulson the all-around perfect choice for Spider-Man’s new mentor.
Phil Coulson’s Journey as Death is Only Just Beginning
Coulson May Be Helping Spider-Man Now, but That Isn’t His Only Cosmic Purpose
It’s almost as though Phil Coulson was chosen by the Death Stone just to carry out this specific function. Sure, he’s also responsible for reaping the souls of the dead, but anyone could do that. Only Phil Coulson – the ultimate fan of superheroes – could carry the weight of being Death while also helping one of the greatest heroes in the Marvel Universe, Spider-Man. However, being Peter’s mentor is far from Coulson’s only purpose, as he also belongs to the cosmic superhero team, the Infinity Watch, and their journey in Marvel Comics is only just beginning.
