Deadpool & Wolverine hopes to inject new life into Phase Five as the Marvel Cinematic Universe gradually changes its tone and presentation. However, director Shawn Levy believes the upcoming team-up blockbuster will have fans reminiscing about the MCU’s early days.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Levy claimed Deadpool & Wolverine would prompt some nostalgia among fans as it mirrors the more character-driven stories told by some early-era MCU films. According to Levy, the story Deadpool & Wolverine’s characters tell outweighs the wider MCU stakes associated with the movie. “The character stakes are more important than the global MCU stakes,” Levy said.

Emma Corrin names two very different movie characters as their inspiration for Cassandra Nova.

Though Deadpool & Wolverine‘s huge stakes have been played up by many, including Marvel president Kevin Feige, Levy’s comments point to what’s on the line for the character being more vital to the story. Early MCU movies like Iron Man mirror this thinking, where intimidating villains did dangerous things, but the character stakes still took center stage. A similar approach was applied in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, when Rocket’s (Bradley Cooper) heartbreaking capture and journey was the greater focus than the wider stakes involved, making the threequel the lone critical and commercial MCU success story of 2023.

Levy previously insisted Deadpool & Wolverine will be “decidedly something different” than other MCU films, acknowledging the underwhelming performances of recent projects and how he believes his movie will rectify the cinematic universe’s recent slump. The film will be the first R-rated feature-length project in MCU history and includes multiple elements from the cinematic universe and X-Men franchise efforts.
