Deadpool and Wolverine are here to declare once and for all that violence is the answer in Deadpool/Wolverine #3, written by Benjamin Percy and art by Joshua Cassara. Logan needs to get to the bottom of these mysteries, and he’s willing to do whatever it takes to beat the information out of Wade.
Logan’s got Wade strapped to a chair in the back of an abandoned bar in South Dakota. Unfortunately for Deadpool, this isn’t a kinky one-on-one in the champagne room with Wolverine. No, Logan figures that the only way to get the answers he’s looking for, like who’s controlling Wade and why, is to tie him down and trigger the take-over with violence. So, naturally, the two go at it (which still just means they fight) until they stumble into a solution. Meanwhile, Maverick and O*N*E try to piece together the aftermath and formulate a plan. Stryfe also continues with his plan to reactivate Logan and raise a bunch of dead bodies with the mysterious Legacy 2.0.

Logan Beats the Answers Out of Wade over and Over
Thankfully, Wade spends most of this issue as a quipy perv. In other words, Wade finally gets to be himself. It’s a nice treat to get this much Deadpool after the first two issues where the character is mostly under Stryfe’s spell.
As much fun as the fight between Deadpool and Wolverine is, it wouldn’t be nearly as fun without the classic back-and-forth readers expect between these two. It’s the magic sauce that needs equal parts gory visceral violence and silly lighthearted jokes. The character stuff throughout this issue reminds readers that, underneath this “X-Cutioner” spell, there is a familiar person who is at stake. The character work also directly leads to the solution to the problem.
A Very Deadpool Solution
Wade Begs Logan to Penetrate Him
After a signature endless brawl between these two, Wade comes to yet again, but this time he realizes that he remembers a little bit from the X-Cutioner’s brain. As the personas flip back and forth, some residual memories seem to linger.
So, Deadpool hatches a plan. Wolverine needs to stab Deadpool hard enough to trigger the X-Cutioner, ask a question, and then immediately stab Deadpool again to bring Wade back. The hope is that Wade will come to with the answer, rattling around in what’s left of his head. It’s an absurd idea, but it’s also so satisfying when it works. It’s a clever idea, it makes sense, and it requires even more violence towards Deadpool, which the merc himself signed up for. It’s a funny solution to the problem that works in multiple ways.

Cause This Artwork Is on Another Level
The artwork throughout this run so far has been terrific, but it was taken up a notch in this issue. The centerpiece of Deadpool/Wolverine #3 is this fight and search for answers. So, the artwork needed to be compelling.
This issue needed to make readers’ skin crawl. And thankfully these panels delivered. This single fight serves as the meat and potatoes of this issue, and its execution makes that meal satisfying all on its own. The artwork also makes the brief asides to Maverick and Stryfe feel important and dramatic even with considerably less time devoted to those plot points. Comic art can make or break an issue and in this case, it’s the former.
Lions and Tigers and Zombies, Oh My!
At This Point, Readers Are up for Anything
This really has been a great run so far and readers are definitely intrigued and excited about what’s to come based on everything that has been set up. This issue raised the stakes again by sprinkling some zombies on top!
The little tease at the end here brings a little giddy grin to readers’ faces. Sure, maybe zombies can feel played out, but to have these two characters in the mix, after already giving us skeletal dinosaur kaiju, just feels like a cherry on top of a ridiculous and fun sundae.
