Highlights

The release of Deadpool 3 in 2024 signals a new trend for the MCU, with the potential for it to be the only MCU movie of the year. Deadpool 3 is highly anticipated, with expectations for its success being astronomically high, given the previous box office success of the Deadpool franchise. The release of Deadpool 3 as the sole focus of the MCU in 2024 may be an experiment to combat superhero fatigue and oversaturation, potentially leading to a change in Marvel’s release strategy.

It would be a bit of an understatement to call the MCU a massive force in the movie industry, and Deadpool 3 is only bound to add to it. With dozens of movies made and billions of dollars earned, the MCU has become a train that isn’t slowing anytime soon. With all that success, the MCU has really ramped up its productions, resulting in what some have called superhero fatigue.

While the concept of superhero fatigue in movies is debatable, one thing that isn’t is the fact that the MCU is putting out a lot of content. With multiple movies and series coming out every single year, it can be hard for the average fan to keep track of everything, and even worse, it can be hard for those casual fans to care about every character. With Deadpool 3 potentially being the only MCU movie of 2024, the movie may signal the beginning of a new trend for the MCU.

With no MCU movies slated to release in 2024 except for Deadpool 3 in July, it’s safe to say that all focus is going to be on that movie. With Ryan Reynolds set to star alongside Hugh Jackman in their MCU debuts, there is a lot of buzz to build for a movie like Deadpool 3. Outside of those major stars and all the rumors surrounding who may appear in the film, the fact that it will also be the MCU’s first official R-rated effort has caught the attention of a lot of people. The expectations for this movie are astronomically high, and the MCU needs it to be the big win that most people are expecting it to be.

With how well previous Deadpool movies have done, and how warmly they’ve been received, the success of Deadpool 3 is essentially a foregone conclusion. The original Deadpool was made on a budget that didn’t even stretch into the $60 million mark and managed to make nearly $800 million at the box office. The second film, though having nearly double the budget, managed to do just as well as the first, and fans have been waiting for Deadpool’s chaotic return for a long time. Add in Hugh Jackman after his universally loved performance in 2017’s Logan, and Deadpool 3 is set to rake it in at the box office.

Deadpool 3 Gets Some Room To Breathe

Marvel is likely to send the hype train for the movie out in full force when it comes time for marketing, and Deadpool 3 being the sole focus of the MCU makes that train all the more powerful. With Deadpool 3 taking priority, it will be hard for fans to be sidetracked by other Marvel hero properties either in theatres or on Disney+. Once 2024 officially rolls around, Marvel will have half a year to get audiences thrilled to see Deadpool 3, and with how quickly the announcement of Hugh Jackman’s joining of the film broke the internet, that won’t be too tricky.

Seeing how it would be an odd move to move a project up before Deadpool 3, it seems like Deadpool and Wolverine won’t have any competition in attracting fans. While the initial goal may be to get those who love the MCU hyped up for the movie and all its multiversal mayhem, the mainstream stardom of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman is bound to get many more casual fans interested in going to see the film, and maybe even pre-ordering tickets when that becomes available. Even further, the past success of the Wolverine and X-Men films starring Hugh Jackman will likely bring over any superhero fans who haven’t loved recent MCU efforts.

Deadpool 3 Could Break The Marvel Model

Deadpool 3 Quick Facts:

Director: Shawn Levy Writers: Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, Zeb Wells, Ryan Reynolds, Shawn Levy Producers: Kevin Feige, Ryan Reynolds, Shawn Levy Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Emma Corrin Release Date: July 26th, 2024

It may sound melodramatic for any kind of declaration of Deadpool 3 changing Marvel’s model for good, but it’s possible that it will. At this point, it seems like it’s no accident that Deadpool 3 is the only Marvel movie in 2024, something that may be an experiment to combat the ongoing problem of MCU oversaturation. There are just too many things for fans to keep track of in such an interconnected multiversal story, and some people are going to make the choice to just not see certain Marvel movies, as seems to be the case with The Marvels.

Making the decision to hone in on a single movie (at least for now) in 2024 could be an attempt to see if a bit of a longer wait will work out. While the wait for Deadpool 3 isn’t significantly different from the previous wait for The Marvels from the last MCU movie, roughly eight months between MCU movies is a big deal. It is also probably safe to say that the hype for Deadpool 3 has been much higher than the hype for the latest struggling effort The Marvels ever was and that’s even after The Marvels began having trailers come out. If the space Deadpool 3 gets ends up paying off, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Marvel pulling back a bit on their releases, focusing much more on releasing quality over what some view as quick cash-ins that a large portion of the fanbase just doesn’t care about.

Deadpool 3 is set to release on July 26th, 2024.

Deadpool

Deadpool is a franchise focused on the Marvel antihero Deadpool, the cheeky red masked mutant who is famous for often breaking the fourth wall. Originally a terminally ill cancer patient, Deadpool was given a serum that activated a gene in his body to heal his illness. This left him severely disfigured, hence his trademark outfit.
