Acclaimed DC Comics artist Jim Lee has paid homage to the iconic franchise DragonBall Z and its legendary creator, Akira Toriyama, by releasing art featuring Son Goku. Toriyama passed away in March at age 68.
The President and Chief Creative Officer of DC Comics took to Instagram to unveil the stylish black-and-white art showcasing Son Goku in battle mode. Lee’s caption reads, “In memory of the legendary mangaka Akira Toriyama who brought the world the amazing Dragon Ball Z.” The art shared by Lee represents only his latest unofficial venture into depicting manga characters, previously drawing his own iterations of Berserk’s Guts, My Hero Academia’s All Might and Ultraman.
McFarlane Toys to Release Superman Figure Inspired by Jim Lee
McFarlane Toys’ new Superman figurine inspired by the artwork of DC Comics’ current CCO, Jim Lee, will soon be available for pre-order.
Lee’s art is also the latest in a long line of tributes paid to the late Dragon Ball, Sand Land, and Dr. Slump creator Toriyama. Shortly after Toriyama’s death, Archie Comics paid tribute by posting a picture of its eponymous flagship character, Archie, and Goku, posing together, bidding farewell to the icon.
In a more official capacity, Lee recently dropped the final covers for the upcoming DC and Marvel crossovers, DC vs. Marvel Omnibus, and the DC/Marvel: The Amalgam Age Omnibus. Lee’s return for the DC Versus Marvel Omnibus and the DC/Marvel: The Amalgam Age Omnibus marked theend of the artist’s 25-year Marvel Comics hiatus. Lee’s finished art for both titles is inked by Scott Williams and colored by Alex Sinclair. Regarding DC vs. Marvel Omnibus, Lee wrote on Instagram,”It can now be revealed: Marvel vs DC Omnibus cover—collecting the Big Two crossovers from yesteryear. Are you not entertained?”
