The next step has been made clear for Daredevil, with a bombshell creative team returns to Hell’s Kitchen next year for a new look at Matt Murdock that is unlike anything fans have ever seen before, when the Marvel heroe begins in Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell.

Marvel made the announcement during New York Comic Con 2024, revealing the creative team of Charles Soule and Steve McNiven will tell the tale, taking place several decades in the future, following a significantly older version of Matt Murdock who lost his powers long ago, and a world that desperately needs a hero to save it.

Years into the future, a powerless Matt Murdock is no longer Daredevil, but he’s still the Man Without Fear! Doing whatever he can to help those in need in a city broken beyond repair, he’ll finally be able take the fight to where it matters most when something catastrophic happens causing his powers to miraculously return. With no one by his side, Daredevil has little chance against the evil permeating every corner until Captain America entrusts him with a mission to safeguard the world’s only hope…

Two major events will pull Matt Murdock into becoming Daredevil once again, the first being the mysterious return of his powers after decades of them being gone, and Captain America entrusting him with the one thing that could save the world. These two details are poised to make a fantastic Daredevil story that fans are unlikely to forget any time soon.

What ‘Cold Day in Hell’ Means For Daredevil’s Legacy

Daredevil Joins The Likes Of Old Man Logan With A Dark Story About The Future

One of the most successful formats that Marvel has discovered is taking a character and putting them in a dark dystopian future. This was first seen with Old Man Logan by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven. It’s no coincidence that the same artist from this legendary book is returning for Daredevil: Cold Day In Hell. One of the core parts of Old Man Logan was taking Wolverine and putting him in a post-apocalyptic world, a truly hopeless situation where there are no heroes left. The book was a massive success and Daredevil is finally getting the same treatment, which has been long overdue.

Of all of Marvel’s heroes, Daredevil has always been one of the darker ones. He’s ridiculously obsessive, and his stories never pull any punches. While other major characters like Spider-Man certainly have dark stories, that’s rarely their norm, but it is for Daredevil. Taking a character like Matt Murdock and putting him in a dark future where all hope seems lost is a setting where his character would thrive due to his obsessive nature and history of handling dark material, and many more have already experienced similar situations, such as in Old Man Logan and Spider-Man: Reign.

Our Take on Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell

Daredevil’s Best Stories Have Always Been Darker In Tone

Matt Murdock is a character who will do anything to save his city. But after losing his powers, he simply couldn’t help people like he used to. As the world grew darker and darker around him, all he could do was stand by as society fell into misery. Now, despite his age, he’s been given a second chance with his powers returning. While Daredevil may not have been able to prevent his city from falling into darkness, this new story will show readers just how far he’s willing to go to pull it back from the brink.

Daredevil: Cold Day In Hell #1 is on sale in April 2024 from Marvel Comics.
