Warning: Spoilers for Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell #1

Marvel Comics just dramatically rewrote the origin of Daredevil’s powers, in a major shake-up for the hero. A new series depicts a future in which an older, depowered Matt Murdock continues to help his city by volunteering at a food shelter. His powers have faded, but a series of events leads to Matt regaining his super-abilities, giving them a brand-new origin, and breathing life back into Daredevil.

In a preview for Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell #1– written by Charles Soule, with art by Steve McNiven– while helping at a food center, Matt Murdock takes out the trash, but runs into a group of citizens fleeing the subway. One of them starts to say there’s a bomb, but is interrupted by an explosion, and Matt gets caught in it.

A deadly gas fills the air and reawakens Matt’s Daredevil powers. Overwhelmed by the senses, Matt has to remember his training from his mentor, Stick, to focus on one thing and regain control.

Marvel’s New Future Daredevil Story Totally Reinvents How Fans Understand His Powers

The MCU portrays Daredevil’s powers as enhanced senses, developed by working with Stick to hone his abilities, whereas the comics display his abilities as actual powers gained from the radioactive isotope that spilled on him. Matt Murdock’s enhanced hearing in the MCU allows him to echolocate by focusing on one sound, then listening to how they reflect off other nearby objects. In the comics, Matt can actually emit a low radio wave from his brain, and when those signals bounce back to him, he is able to recreate a 3D image in his mind, and “see” everything around him.

Amid His TV Return, Daredevil Is Preparing His Very Own Dark Knight Comeback at Marvel

Marvel is bringing back one of the most prolific Daredevil writers of all time to help give the Man Without Fear his own ‘Old Man Logan’ story.

Essentially, Daredevil’s powers in the comics and the MCU are similar, but the MCU is portrayed in a way that makes it feel more realistic, rather than giving him powers that are much less believable in a live-action setting. Since Daredevil in the comics has powers rather than a trained skill, this apparently leaves Matt vulnerable to losing them in his old age, which is depicted in Cold Day in Hell, when this new dangerous chemical reawakens Matt’s powers, and he is quickly able to regain control of them.

The Reawakening Of Matt Murdock’s Powers Could Mean New Abilities For Daredevil

Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell #1 – Available April 2, 2025 From Marvel Comics; Cold Day in Hell #2 Releases May 14, 2025

The first time Matt Murdock was hit with a radioactive isotope, he gained superhuman powers. Now that his powers have been reawakened with a dangerous gas, the same powers could just return to him, or he could develop a few more added abilities. Cold Day in Hell is a short series with only three issues, so there isn’t much time to develop anything drastically different, but an addition to his powers, like maybe superhuman strength to make up for his old age, could be possible. However, Daredevil doesn’t need any additional superpowers to be a threat to enemies.
