Spider-Man and Batman star in the first, unofficial teaser image from the newly announced upcoming crossover special between DC Comics and Marvel Comics, as superstar comic artist Dan Mora took to social media to share some “fan art” of the heroes hanging out together. Needless to say, fans are now even more hyped for the project than they already were.
Mora posted his illustration on Instagram, noting that he “couldn’t resist drawing” the duo together following the announcement of the upcoming crossover. While More calls it “fan art,” it should be known that he is one of DC’s biggest talents, and having him churn out a fully-realized piece featuring the two most popular superheroes in America feels like a pretty big deal coming on the heels of the crossover news.
There are no details yet on who will write or draw the comics, and no story details available at this time, though clearly Dan Mora would love to be involved, and his post shows he absolutely should be.
DC Artist Dan Mora Is As Hyped For The Upcoming Crossover With Marvel As Fans Are
A Much-Needed Comic Book Spectacle
The comics industry is in a dicey place right now. Diamond Comic Distributors – who had a functional monopoly on comics distribution for years leading up to the COVID-19 pandemic – is currently in bankruptcy, and they’re calling on long-overdue lines of credit, putting a strain on comic shops. Sales were down last year after years of being up in absolute terms, and consumer confidence everywhere in the economy is…not great. Just like the last time this happened, DC and Marvel have put aside their differences to cross over and create a must-see event for fans.
A superstar artist like Dan Mora drawing Batman and Spider-Man isn’t just exciting on social media – it seems like a very likely scenario for a real comic book in the coming months.
While both DC’s Absolute Universe and Marvel’s Ultimate line are doing very well, the main lines of comics can use a bit of a boost. That’s likely what Marvel and DC are hoping to offer by coming together again for the first time in years. It is not yet known what characters are involved, nor has it been revealed what creators will be writing and drawing the series, but seeing a superstar artist like Dan Mora drawing Batman and Spider-Man isn’t just exciting on social media – it seems like a very likely scenario for a real comic book in the coming months.

A Brief History Of DC/Marvel Crossovers, Explained
Historically, Spider-Man is considered Marvel’s flagship character, and the most popular superhero the company has. Batman fills the “most popular” role for DC, although Superman is still more likely to be treated like a mascot. The pair previously crossed over in the 1990s, appearing in a pair of stories written by legendary Marvel and DC writer J.M. DeMatteis. In 1995’s Spider-Man and Batman, with art by Mark Bagley, the pair faced off against Joker and Carnage. In 1997’s Batman and Spider-Man, featuring Graham Nolan art, they chased down Kingpin and Ra’s al Ghul.
Spider-Man has had one-on-one crossovers with Superman and Batman, while the Dark Knight has crossed over with Spidey, the Punisher, Daredevil, Captain America, and the Incredible Hulk.
While fans still regularly talk about mega-crossovers like DC vs. Marvel, JLA/Avengers, and the Amalgam Universe titles, most of DC and Marvel’s crossover stories have featured a handful or less heavy hitters from each universe. Spider-Man has had one-on-one crossovers with Superman and Batman, while the Dark Knight has crossed over with Spidey, the Punisher, Daredevil, Captain America, and the Incredible Hulk. Superman, DC’s other biggest name, has crossed over with Spider-Man, Hulk, the Fantastic Four, and Silver Surfer. Obviously, both Spider-Man and Batman both appeared in titles like JLA/Avengers and Marvel vs. DC (and fought Superboy and Captain America, respectively).
