Summary

Brie Larson confirms that Captain Marvel will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but keeps mum on the specific project she will appear in. Larson teases that there is still much more to explore with the character of Carol Danvers and that she is excited to continue the journey. The possible future appearances for Captain Marvel could include the upcoming Avengers movies and the Fantastic Four reboot, which would make sense given the cosmic-level threats they face.

After finally making her proper franchise return with The Marvels, Brie Larson confirms knowing what Captain Marvel’s Marvel Cinematic Universe future holds. Having made her debut in the 2019 solo movie, Larson’s Carol Danvers has appeared in five total MCU projects, including Avengers: Endgame, in which she helped take down Thanos in the beginning and end of the movie, as well as the mid-credits scene of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and the finale of Ms. Marvel, which led to the story of The Marvels. While the sequel left clear future paths for Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan and Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau, Carol’s future was more generally open.

Following the movie’s release, Entertainment Tonight spoke with Brie Larson to discuss The Marvels. When asked about her MCU future, the actor not only confirmed that Carol Danvers would return to the franchise, but also teased that she knows exactly where Captain Marvel will appear, though keeps mum on the project, instead expressing her excitement to keep exploring the character. See what Larson shared below:

I don’t want Marvel to come for me. But there is something. There is definitely something, to answer your question, that I would want to say, but I am not going to. I think there is still so much inside of Carol. I feel like getting to be on this team just cracked her open in a way that she hadn’t been, and I really loved that for her. I just loved her letting the shoulders drop a little bit, and not need to feel like all the responsibility was on her. So I think that there is just so much more to go.

Given the MCU is set to feature two more epic crossovers in the form of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars, it did seem all but likely that Larson’s Captain Marvel would return at some point, though her tease of already knowing where she will proves interesting. The next two Avengers movies recently saw something of a creative setback as director Destin Daniel Cretton exited The Kang Dynasty and Marvel pulled writer Michael Waldron, who previously was the Head Writer for Loki season 1 and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, from the project.

With Cretton and Larson having had history with Short Term 12, The Glass Castle and Just Mercy, there was some hope for The Kang Dynasty to see them properly reunite once again after her brief cameo in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, though the door may not be entirely closed. The report of the director stepping down from the Avengers sequel indicated that he had done so to focus on resuming filming his Wonder Man show for Disney+ and develop the Shang-Chi sequel. Considering both the various creative reshufflings at Marvel and delays from the recently concluded WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the latter movie could find itself arriving sooner than expected and reteaming Cretton with Larson yet again.

The other seemingly likely candidate for Captain Marvel’s return after The Marvels is the in-development Fantastic Four reboot. With recent reports indicating casting is finally closing in for the movie, including Pedro Pascal as Mister Fantastic, and the team itself often deal with cosmic-level threats, a cameo from Larson could be a perfect way to introduce the superhero family to the Avengers leading into The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars. The movie’s finished script would also make Larson’s knowledge of where she will return make more sense as she determines her schedule for an appearance in the project.

Reports also claim that Fantastic Four will introduce Galactus to the MCU with Javier Bardem playing the iconic villain.
