As the Venom War Rages, Marvel’s “K Project” Is Redefining Its Symbiote Lore Yet Again

Marvel is once again making some major changes to its symbiote lore, as the latest twist on the publisher’s most dangerous alien species is set to be uncovered by none other than Carnage. While exploring a laboratory, Carnage comes across a shocking conspiracy to weaponize symbiotes, in an upgrade that could have a significant impact on the future of the Marvel Universe.

Venom War: Carnage #2 – by writer Torunn Grønbekk and artist Pere Pérez – finds Carnage using possession to take over the body of Finn Taylor, and he uses that new body to infiltrate the lab Finn is in charge of. It’s here that Carnage sees exactly what the K-project is, and it might be surprising to some readers.

It seems that the K-project is about selling symbiotes on a nearly industrial scale. This would completely change how wars are fought in the Marvel Universe, and it would certainly have devastating consequences.

Symbiotes are incredible aliens. They’re capable of increasing a user’s endurance, strength, and granting them incredible abilities. It’s no surprise that some group would try to weaponize them over and over again. The scientists in this preview even mention an auction, likely being where they’re going to try and sell off this new brainless version of symbiotes. The problem with symbiotes has always been their ability to resist or even directly take over their host, but creating a symbiote that has no mind of its own would completely solve this problem.

Groups have been trying to weaponize symbiotes for decades in the Marvel Universe. This goes as far back as Vietnam, as seen in the story Web of Venom: Ve’Nam, which revealed that the US Government attempted to use symbiote soldiers to help win the war in Vietnam. Unfortunately, this didn’t work as the symbiotes simply went insane and took full control over their hosts. Yet this new K-project could be what finally solves this. If these new symbiotes are little more than mindless suits, then they’d make the perfect enhancement to whatever organization uses them.

Now, with the Venom War raging, and the previous Venom hosts are all fighting over who gets to keep the iconic symbiote, zombiotes are roaming the streets of Manhattan infecting everyone, Marvel’s most dangerous symbiote by far, Carnage, has discovered a secret plot to sell symbiotes to the highest bidder as soldiers. While there’s no telling how all of these plot points will be resolved or tie together, there’s one thing that’s for sure: Carnage will definitely be using all the chaos to his advantage in the Marvel Universe.
