Marvel is introducing the character find of the century with Amazing Spider-Man #1, a title that will introduce some new guy named “Spider-Man.” And along for the ride is artist Simone Di Meo, who will provide a variant cover for the issue.
“This is my first AMAZING SPIDER-MAN cover!” Di Meo said via press release provided to Comic Book Club. “That’s already a great honor, but to be able to do it for a new launch by three legendary creators who I’m also a BIG fan of is even better! I’m sure that Joe, Pepe and John will do an incredible job on the series. I’ve been following all their work for many years, and they know how to weave the right webs–I can’t wait to read it!”
Written by Joe Kelly, with art by Pepe Larraz and John Romita Jr., April’s Amazing Spider-Man #1 will introduce a character who can do whatever a spider can, so likely spin webs from his anus and eat flies, but could be wrong about that.
The Eisner-nominated Di Meo previously worked on Champions and Immortal Hulk, but has been in the wilderness of “not working for Marvel” for the past five years. Now, he’s back, along with covers by Ryan Stegman, Lee Bermejo, and Gil Kane.
Marvel is teasing that this is just the first of many projects for Di Meo, including more variant covers, and interiors on a TBA Marvel series later this year. Added Di Meo, “I’m really excited to be back working at Marvel. Being able to work with some of the most iconic characters in the world fills me with pride and emotion! The project we are building together is truly a dream. It will be a little longer before I’m able to talk about it, but it is something that I hope the fans will appreciate. The team and I are doing our best to create something unique. It is a new artistic challenge for me, but I love to challenge myself!”
