Warning: Contains SPOILERS for The Ultimates #8! Mephisto is a being of pure evil in Marvel Comics, with absolutely zero redeeming qualities, offering only suffering and pain to the universe at large. Mephisto is the ruler of hell, and is responsible for the eternal torment of countless souls. And what’s worse is that Mephisto is practically invincible. At least, that’s what fans thought before now, as Marvel has finally found a way to actually kill Mephisto.
In The Ultimates #8 by Deniz Camp and Juan Frigeri, the Guardians of the Galaxy of Earth-6160 travel back in time from the 61st Century to the 21st Century to rescue one of their time-displaced members: America Chavez. Aside from America (who ultimately decides to stay with the Ultimates), this new Guardians of the Galaxy consists of Captain Marvel, Star-Lord, Cosmo the Spacedog, and Ultimate Nullifier. And it’s that last member who’s really notable, as they’re the one who actually killed Mephisto.
When the Guardians first arrive in the past, the Ultimates immediately jump into action to defend America. However, it quickly became apparent that the Ultimates were way out of their depth, as the Guardians of the Galaxy wielded powers that the Ultimates “don’t even have names for”. Arguably the most powerful of them all is Ultimate Nullifier, who not only stops She-Hulk in her tracks like it’s nothing, but who once had a duel with Mephisto where they used their N-Gun to shoot Mephisto through his black heart with a Ø-Bullet, killing him instantly.
The Ultimate Universe Reveals How Mephisto Can Be Killed in Earth-616
Mephisto is a Major Issue in the Prime Marvel Comics Reality, but Perhaps Not For Long
The Ultimate Universe introduces a character who is the living embodiment of the Ultimate Nullifier, which – in Earth-616 – is a device that has the power to destroy an entire universe with the flip of a switch. The Ultimate Nullifier was introduced in the Fantastic Four story “The Coming of Galactus”, and was the very thing that saved the world from Galactus’ cosmic hunger. The device is rarely shown in Marvel Comics, as it’s far too dangerous to use. However, it seems Marvel’s heroes will have no choice but to use it if they ever want to kill Mephisto for good.
It can be assumed that the Ø-Bullet holds the concentrated power of the Ultimate Nullifier, and utterly eradicates what it shoots. If the heroes in Earth-616 can achieve the same level of control and concentration with the original Ultimate Nullifier, then they will hold the power to destroy Mephisto for good. Of course, that is a tall order, as even the smartest Marvel characters haven’t attempted such a feat for fear of total universal annihilation. But, the Ultimate Universe revealed what can kill Mephisto, and now it’s up to Earth-616’s heroes to figure out how to pull it off.
The Ultimate Universe’s Ultimate Nullifier Did More than Kill Mephisto
Ultimate Nullifier Erased All Forms of Hellish Suffering Upon Killing Mephisto
Ultimate Nullifier in Earth-6160 didn’t just kill Mephisto when they shot him with the Ø-Bullet, as doing so erased all suffering from existence as it relates to Mephisto and hell. Basically, the Ultimate Nullifier got rid of hell in the Ultimate Universe by killing the devil, which is also good news for Earth-616. If the heroes of Marvel’s prime universe can figure out how to weaponize the Ultimate Nullifier to kill Mephisto, they won’t have to worry about another demon taking his place, as hell itself will be destroyed along with him.

Ultimate Marvel
Created in 2000, the Ultimate Marvel imprint redesigned the entire Marvel Comics universe with a new set of origin stories and relationships. The reboot reinterpreted Marvel continuity from scratch in an attempt to simplify and update the company’s 60-year history for modern audiences. With famous comic book writers such as Brian Michael Bendis, Warren Ellis, and Mark Millar at the helm, the Ultimate universe (named Earth-1610 within the Marvel multiverse) lasted 15 years and provided plenty of inspiration for the MCU.
