In a historic moment for the Avengers, a classic hero has finally joined the team after more than three decades. While most of Marvel’s greatest heroes have joined the team at one time or another, there are still those who have yet to fight alongside Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. However, that list is now one hero shorter, as Captain America’s Emergency Response Squad recruit a specialist for a new mission.

The Unkillable Hero Is Partnering with Greek God Hercules

In Astonishing Avengers Infinity Comic #12 by Steve Orlando and Francesco Archidiacono, the team’s resident tech expert Night Thrasher looks into a mysterious monolith that has materialized on Staten Island. Not knowing what’s inside, the hero reaches out to two heroes who can survive pretty much anything – Marvel’s God of Heroes Hercules and Craig Hollis’ Mister Immortal.

Mister Immortal was played by David Pasquesi in Disney+’s She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.

Mister Immortal is the leader of the Great Lakes Avengers and has Marvel’s most powerful healing factor of all time. Mister Immortal has been totally rejected by Death, and cannot be killed by any means, instantly healing from all injuries. Mister Immortal is the sole example of homo supreme – the next step from mutantkind’s homo superior. While the Great Lakes Avengers are often seen as a joke, Mister Immortal has pulled off some impressive victories, including stopping the villainous Maelstrom from destroying the entire universe.

Marvel’s Best Healing Factor Joins the Avengers

Mister Immortal Is Seen as a Joke, But He’s a True Hero

In Marvel lore, Mister Immortal is intended to survive until the end of the universe. While Reed Richards and Susan Storm’s son Franklin is meant to survive into the next iteration of the universe, becoming that reality’s Galactus, Mister Immortal is intended as a back-up should Franklin not make it. He therefore fulfills an essential purpose in the universe, but only once it reaches its very end. Until then, Mister Immortal is essentially killing time, using his predestined immortality to fight crime.

While the Great Lakes Avengers are often seen as a joke team who use the Avengers name without permission, they’ve had some incredibly dark adventures. Mister Immortal has lost his closest friends and allies and descended to the depths of despair, all while being considered a walking joke by other heroes. Now, he finally gets a win, as the Avengers acknowledge his unique skillset is perfect for investigating new threats.

Astonishing Avengers follows Steve Rogers’ Avengers Emergency Response Squad, which is intended as a first-response team tackling unexpected threats. The team has a large roster with diverse powers, recruiting specialists for given missions. The team already made history by recruiting Elektra to the Avengers for the first time, and now Mister Immortal is enjoying the same honor. Hopefully, becoming an official Avengers member buys Mister Immortal a little more respect among Marvel’s heroes… if he survives the experience.
