As described in Marvel Comics’ press release, X-Men by Chris Claremont: Prelude to a Future Past #1 will “Revisit the nightmarish world of tomorrow that is “Days of Future Past” in a revelatory prelude by the legendary scribe and illustrated by his X-Treme X-Men (2001) collaborator, Salvador Larroca! Discover at last how the surviving X-Men saved one of their own, Rachel Summers, from her torment as a Hound – and find out which surprising faces had a vital part to play in the mutant resistance!”

Chris Claremont is among the most beloved and acclaimed comic book writers of all time, with his legendary run on Uncanny X-Men from 1975-1991 giving rise to some of the most iconic characters and concepts in pop culture history. In that time, Claremont helped to craft what are now indelible additions to the Marvel Universe, ranging from the Shi’ar Empire’s Majestrix Lilandra Neramani to Canada’s premier superteam Alpha Flight to the infamous White Queen herself, Emma Frost. Claremont also charted the history of mutantkind decades and centuries into the future, with events such as the original Days of Future Past falling under his purview.

Professor X Broke One of Krakoa’s Most Sacred Rules, But His Reasoning is Beautiful

The X-Men’s own founder just brought back a fan-favorite character, although there is no telling what his fellow mutants might think about it.

In recent years, Claremont and artist Edgar Salazar have helmed a series of throwback titles for Marvel Comics that further elaborate on fan-favorite eras in the publisher’s history. Among these are Wolverine: Madripoor Knights, which takes place during the titular mutant antihero’s “Patch” era, as well as 2024’s Wolverine: Deep Cut. The latter of these dropped readers into the middle of a ferocious battle between Wolverine and his longtime nemesis, Sabretooth.

Ahead of the series’ release, Marvel editor Mark Basso stated that “Deep Cut is going to finally step back and show what there just wasn’t time or space to show of Wolverine before he returned in #251, and make good on that title in all senses of the word!” Basso added, “The story here will stand completely on its own, so if you have no idea what those plots entailed, rest assured you’ve got a complete adventure in this series.”

X-Men

Since their debut in 1963, Marvel’s X-Men have been more than just another superhero team. While the team really hit its stride as the All New, All Different X-Men in 1975, Marvel’s heroic mutants have always operated as super-outcasts, protecting a world that hates and fears them for their powers.

Key members of the X-Men include Professor X, Jean Grey, Cyclops, Wolverine, Iceman, Beast, Rogue, and Storm. Often framed as the world’s second strongest superheroes, after the Avengers, they are nonetheless one of Marvel’s most popular and important franchises.
