The following contains major spoilers for Namor #8, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
An underrated and obscure Marvel Comics superhero has a whole new role in Atlantis.
After officially dissolving the Atlantean monarchy in a bid to unite the various undersea kingdoms who have waged war against one another for so long, the titular hero of Namor #8 is ready to usher in a bold new era for his people. Of course, it isn’t just the people of Atlantis and its neighbors whose lives will be drastically affected by this shift in the status quo, but even those who call the surface world their home. As such, the United Nations is quick to enlist a liaison who can both communicate with Atlanteans on land and in their own territory, and there is no one better suited for that task than the Avengers’ very own Stingray.

Doctor Howard Newell, better known as Stingray, was introduced all the way back in Roy Thomas and Raymond Marais’ opening story from 1967’s Tales to Astonish #95, “The Power of the Plunderer!” A brilliant engineer and oceanographer, Newell was behind the development and construction of a sprawling, domed undersea city that would have been the beginning of a whole new kind of farming. When the city was attacked by the villainous Plunderer, it fell on Namor and Lady Dorma to stave off the villain, though they could not prevent the city’s destruction.
In the years that followed, Newell would have more encounters with the Sub-Mariner, who he helped quell the threat of a deadly virus unleashed by Tiger Shark. Eventually, Newell crafted an underwater exploratory suit that allowed him to traverse even the deepest of seas with ease. Taking on the mantle of Stingray, Newell embarked upon dozens of explosive adventures, several of which landed him a place on teams ranging from the seafaring Deep Six to Deadpool’s Mercs for Money to nearly a half-dozen iterations of the Avengers.

Not only has Namor proven himself to be more capable and powerful than the combined might of all these armies, he has even proven his desire to see his people flourish is greater than the immortal Neptune’s desire for glory. After discovering that it was Neptune who was personally responsible for Atlantis’ ancient downfall, Namor rebuked his former patron god, all before revealing the truth to everyone and anyone who would hear him.
