The following contains major spoilers for Uncanny X-Men #11, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
One of the deadliest cosmic threats the X-Men have ever known is standing in the way of an entire empire’s downfall.
Uncanny X-Men #11 opens far from any member of the eponymous team of heroes, instead bringing readers to orbit just above the far-off world of Leyo. There, a lone Shi’ar spacecraft is caught in the midst of a bloody mutiny. As members of the crew turn on their own and pave the way for the ship to be boarded by heavily-armed rebels, the royal guard can do little to fight back before being violently overwhelmed. That is, save for one exceptionally fervent member of them, and there is nothing Deathbird won’t do to protect her niece, Shi’ar Empress, and daughter of Charles Xavier – Majestrix Xandra Neramani.

Introduced in 1977’s Ms. Marvel #9 by Chris Claremont and Keith Pollard, the dreaded Cal’syee Neramani, better known as Deathbird, is one of the Shi’ar Empire’s most lethal and capable fighters. As the oldest of her siblings, Cal’syee was first in line to ascend to the throne, and would have if not for the murderous rage that drove her to murder her own mother and sister. After being exiled from her home and stripped of her titles, Cal’syee took up the mantle of Deathbird and embarked on a decades-long quest for revenge against the family who scorned her and the mutant heroes who protected them.
Thanks to her own mutant abilities and an utterly relentless nature, Deathbird had no problem going toe-to-toe with the likes of Carol Danvers. Deathbird even managed to find the occasional like-minded villain to team up with such as M.O.D.O.K., Vulcan, and Apocalypse, the latter of whom even granted her the title of the Horseman War for a time. Despite this early and storied career as an overt villain, Deathbird gradually came to terms with her crimes, the reaction they garnered, and everything that had happened to her since. Eventually, Deathbird even found a new place for herself as an advisor to the young Majestrix Xandra, not to mention as an unlikely ally to nearly every hero she had previously tormented.

The current Empress, or Majestrix, of the Shi’ar Empire, Xandra Neramani didn’t make her first full appearance in the pages of Marvel Comics until 2018’s Mr. and Mrs. X #3 by Kelly Thompson and Jan Bazaldua. Although Xandra is the biological daughter of X-Men founder Charles Xavier and former Majestrix Lilandra, both were deceased at the time of her birth. As it turns out, Xandra was created by high-ranking members of the Shi’ar Empire, with the iconic Gladiator taking it upon himself to name her Majestrix, largely because of the galvanizing effect the Neramani name would have on the rest of the Empire.
