The following contains major spoilers for NYX #9, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
The future of Krakoa has just become Mojo’s next twisted reality show.
After Charles Xavier received a psychic distress call from his daughter Xandra, the former leader of the X-Men broke out of his cell in Graymalkin Prison and made his way to New York City in search of help. As seen in the pages of NYX #9, it was Anole and Ms. Marvel who joined Xavier in his journey to the old X-Men Treehouse in NYC in search of the last remaining Krakoa Seed. While the heroes are more than capable of seeing their mission through and escaping with their lives, the Krakoa Seed they leave with is not the real thing. Instead, the actual Krakoa Seed is still in the hands of the interdimensional villain known as Mojo, who is more than happy to use its power to begin becoming one with NYC in its entirety.

From the moment Mojo made his Marvel Comics debut in 1985’s Longshot #3 by Ann Nocenti and Arthur Adams, he has easily been one of the strangest villains that the X-Men have ever faced. A member of a literally spineless species who rely on mechanized platforms to carry them around and who largely went insane due to a constant stream of Earthly entertainment they could not comprehend, Mojo became obsessed with such productions. This drove him to not only embrace mainstream media and reality television, but to turn it into the kind of weapon with which he could conquer the entire Mojoverse.
Mojo has long held a deep-seated hatred for the mutants of Earth, which has only been emboldened by his many defeats at the hands of the likes of the X-Men. Most recently, Mojo has set up shop in New York City, using wayward mutants such as the technopath known as Local to help him establish a new safehouse and studio. Mojo has also employed the alter-ego of Mister Friend, which helped him sneak into events such as Dazzler’s latest concert, which nearly became a mass casualty event due to Mojo’s attempts to take control of the minds of everyone in attendance.

Mystique Just Lost Everything
Mystique has officially paid the price for pushing the limits of her own powers, and she is more than happy with everything it cost her.
Krakoa has come a long way since it was first seen in Len Wein and Dave Cockrum’s opening story from 1975’s Giant-Size X-Men #1, “Deadly Genesis!” A literal mutant island, Krakoa’s comic book career began as that of a strange new enemy for the mutant heroes to do battle with. In the decades that followed, Krakoa became a far more sympathetic figure, and eventually opened itself up to the idea of becoming the living island home for mutants everywhere. Tragically, Orchis’ war against mutantkind brought about an end to the Krakoan Era under which mutants prospered, while Krakoa itself was displaced to the White Hot Room where it could reunite with its other self.
