The following contains major spoilers for Iron Man #6, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Tony Stark has a whole new set of problems, and they might just be the death of him.

The titular hero of Iron Man #6 has only recently regained control of his own company, yet even that hasn’t given him access to his old suite of superpowered armor. As such, Tony has been left with only a single means of directly striking out against Doctor Doom’s new regime. Worse still, those who have openly embraced Doom’s new status quo include some of the most menacing villains of all time, including the entire Winter Guard who have already set Iron Man squarely in their sights.

The Winter Guard first appeared in the pages of 1998’s Iron Man #9 by Kurt Busiek and Sean Chen. Formed in the wake of the fall of the USSR, the Winter Guard was envisioned as Russia’s answer to the likes of the Avengers. The original lineup of the Winter Guard consisted of Steel Guardian, Vanguard, Sibercat, Darkstar, Vostok, Fantasma, and Powersurge, few of whom would become mainstays of the team. In the years since, the Winter Guard has become far more closely associated with its current roster, which includes Crimson Dynamo, Ursa Major, and Red Widow.

After the fall of Orchis, Tony Stark was finally given a chance to begin rebuilding the corporate empire he lost to Fei Long. At least, that was the case for a few months, up until A.I.M. and Roxxon decided to make Stark Unlimited the subject of their next hostile takeover. While Tony did everything he could to push back against yet another attempted takeover of his company, there was little he could accomplish from within the boardroom. It wasn’t until Tony uncovered the demon Belasco’s part in the plot against him that he was able to wrest control of Stark Unlimited back from his enemies in full.

The Avengers Latest Victory Also Set Up Their Next Downfall

The Avengers have finally discovered exactly how far Doctor Doom’s latest plan goes, and they are already too late to do anything about it.

This experience would have been bad enough on its own, yet only a few short months later, things got infinitely worse with Doctor Doom’s global takeover. After claiming the power of the Sorcerer Supreme as his own and tricking the Fantastic Four into delivering him an ancient, enchanted blade, Doctor Doom had everything he needed to proclaim himself the supreme leader of Earth in its entirety.

While the vast majority of the world’s heroes have taken it upon themselves to strike back at Doom’s newly minted empire in one way or another, it has been met with a surprising amount of support from a shocking number of ordinary citizens on the ground.
