Ultron could face a huge number of heroes in the MCU after his return in Marvel Television’s upcoming Vision series. Tony Stark created the tyrannical artificial intelligence Ultron during 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, but the robot villain was also seemingly eradicated in the same Phase 2 movie. Now, however, James Spader has been confirmed to be reprising his voice role of Ultron in the MCU’s Vision series, which will bring Paul Bettany’s White Vision back to the MCU in 2026 after WandaVision left his future uncertain.

Ultron created Vision’s vibranium body in Avengers: Age of Ultron, and this connection between the pair of synthetic beings makes Marvel Television’s Vision series the perfect place to bring the villain back to the MCU. However, Ultron has been an antagonist to many heroes in Marvel Comics, so, if his return in 2026 leads to a brighter future in the MCU, there are many notable superheroes that could battle the villain. This could range from Ant-Man to Captain America, and from Daredevil to a brand-new Avengers team, posing an exciting future for Ultron in the MCU.

10 Scott Lang’s Ant-Man & Hank Pym

Hank Pym Created Ultron In Marvel Comics

While the MCU’s Ant-Man, played by Paul Rudd since his eponymous 2015 debut, may seem an unorthodox hero for Ultron to battle, Ant-Man’s connection to the villain in Marvel Comics makes this a very likely battle. In Marvel Comics’ The Avengers #58 from 1968, instead of Tony Stark, it was Hank Pym who created Ultron, using his own brainwaves to develop its artificial intelligence. Ultron ultimately rebelled against his creator, vowing to bring down his “father” by any means necessary, while forming something of an Oedipal bond with Janet van Dyne.

Ultron Never Even Met The MCU Hero He’s Meant To Be In Love With

In the comics Ultron was created by Hank Pym and became obsessed with the Wasp. Yet they never met in the MCU. Was it a missed opportunity?

Hank Pym had nothing to do with Ultron’s development in the MCU, as the villain was instead compiled from the energy of the Mind Stone, JARVIS’ artificial intelligence, and the combined genius of Tony Stark and Bruce Banner. Even so, it would be fantastic to see some sort of callback to Ultron’s Marvel Comics origin by pitting the villain against the MCU’s resident size-changing heroes. Scott Lang has proven himself capable of taking down extremely powerful villains, such as Kang the Conqueror, so Ultron could be next on his list.

9 The Fantastic Four

Ultron Gatecrashed Quicksilver’s Wedding To The Inhuman Crystal

Marvel’s First Family battled Ultron several times in Marvel Comics, both in the real world and in their dreams. Because of this, it would be great to see the robot take on the Fantastic Four team after their debut in Phase 6. Most notably, a version of Ultron known as Ultron-7, created from the body of the android Omega, was used by the Inhuman Maximus to gatecrash the much anticipated wedding of Pietro Maximoff’s Quicksilver and Crystal, Johnny Storm’s ex-girlfriend, in 1974’s The Avengers #127, only to be fought be the Avengers and the Fantastic Four.

The Fantastic Four will battle the planet-eater Galactus and his herald, Shalla-Bal’s Silver Surfer, in 2025’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps. There is also speculation that Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom could make his first appearance in First Steps, so this will likely be too soon to bring Ultron back to the MCU. However, the Fantastic Four will be around for many years to come, creating plenty of opportunities for Marvel’s First Family to take on the tyrannical robot. This would be a brilliant battle to witness, particularly if it involves the MCU’s own Inhumans.

8 Wanda Maximoff’s Scarlet Witch

Wanda Maximoff Has A Troubled History With Ultron

Marvel Television’s Vision series will be the second spinoff from 2021’s WandaVision, continuing Wanda Maximoff and Vision’s relationship development, despite the former’s demise in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. While Vision is connected to Ultron, so is Maximoff’s Scarlet Witch, as she initially sided with the villain in Avengers: Age of Ultron before learning of his true intentions to eradicate humanity. It was Ultron’s actions that led to the death of the Scarlet Witch’s brother, Quicksilver, so Wanda surely has some unfinished business.

Why Quicksilver’s Ultron Death Had To Happen

Quicksilver’s death in Avengers: Age of Ultron doesn’t make a ton of sense, but it was a vital scene for the MCU and Wanda’s growth alike.

Elizabeth Olsen has been heavily rumored to be returning to the MCU as Wanda Maximoff’s Scarlet Witch, perhaps as early as this year’s Agatha All Along series, WandaVision’s first spinoff. If she learns of Ultron’s return when she does eventually come back, there’s no doubt she’d seek vengeance against the villain. Since the Scarlet Witch’s power has increased massively since Avengers: Age of Ultron, to the point that she could create a whole new world around Westview, Ultron wouldn’t stand a chance against her.

7 Simon Williams’ Wonder Man

Wonder Man & The West Coast Avengers Battled Ultron In Marvel Comics

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will soon make his debut as Simon Williams’ Wonder Man, perhaps introducing another member of the MCU’s rumored West Coast Avengers team. This team also includes White Vision in Marvel Comics, so there is speculation that this brand-new Avengers team could form in the MCU’s Vision series. This would explain Ultron’s return, as the villain battled the West Coast Avengers a number of times in Marvel Comics, and even sided with Wonder Man’s brother, the Grim Reaper, to bring down the superhero.

Marvel Television’s
Wonder Man
, which will be a Marvel Spotlight series, wrapped filming in April 2024, but there has been no word on when the series might premiere on Disney+.

Demetrius Grosse will portray Eric Williams’ Grim Reaper in Marvel’s upcoming Wonder Man series, perfectly setting up the MCU to feature an alliance between the Grim Reaper and Ultron. This could pose a huge threat to Wonder Man and the West Coast Avengers, just as it did during 1985’s West Coast Avengers (Vol. 2) #1. The then version of Ultron, Ultron-12, was defeated by the West Coast Avengers, and Wonder Man also took down Ultron-11, so there is a great deal of precedence for this battle to also take place in the MCU.

6 Sam Wilson’s Captain America

Sam Wilson Can Prove His Strength As Captain America By Taking On Ultron

Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson became the MCU’s new Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, but there have been concerns that he isn’t strong enough to replace Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers as the Star-Spangled-Man. Fighting and defeating Ultron would be a fantastic way for Sam Wilson to prove his salt as Captain America, especially after he takes on the Red Hulk, the Serpent Society and the Leader in 2025’s Captain America: Brave New World. Ultron faced Captain America several times in Marvel Comics, both Rogers and Wilson.

Steve Rogers’ Captain America teamed up with the Avengers to take on Ultron in the MCU’s Phase 2, but Sam Wilson might not have any superhero friends to help battle the villain in the MCU’s future. The Avengers aren’t currently operating as a team, though Sam Wilson will be asked to rebuild them in Captain America: Brave New World. This could set him up as a formidable leader of the team, perhaps priming him perfectly to take on Ultron and all manner of other powerful villains in the MCU’s future.

5 Adam Warlock

Ultron Once Took Over Adam Warlock’s Body In Marvel Comics

While most heroes have taken on Ultron without fear of being possessed by his artificial intelligence, the same can’t be said for Adam Warlock. During 2007’s Annihilation: Conquest storyline in Marvel Comics, Ultron inhabited Adam Warlock’s body in an effort to achieve “true techno-organic perfection,” cementing himself as one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel Universe. Adam Warlock eventually forces Ultron to abandon his body, and helps Wraith and Quasar to defeat the villain.

After Will Poulter debuted as Adam Warlock in 2023’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, pitting him against Ultron would be a fantastic way to develop his story in the MCU’s future. Currently, as a member of the new Guardians of the Galaxy team, there’s been no word about Poulter’s return as Adam Warlock, though this is almost a guarantee, especially with new cosmic heroes, including Nova, set to debut in the MCU soon. Adapting this story could dramatically expand Ultron’s influence not only as an Earth-based villain, but as a cosmic one, too.

4 Matt Murdock’s Daredevil

Marvel’s Street Level Heroes Have Taken On Ultron Several Times

Ultron is usually depicted as a huge-scale villain in Marvel Comics, which translated into him being an antagonist for the MCU’s Avengers team in 2015, but he’s also faced many of Marvel’s smaller-scale, street-level heroes. Marvel Television’s upcoming Daredevil: Born Again series will expand the MCU’s street-level storylines, led by Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock. While the series’ first season, scheduled to premiere in March 2025, is too soon to feature Ultron, Daredevil: Born Again season 2 and beyond could include the epic villain.

Marvel Comics’
Daredevil #276
by Ann Nocenti and John Romita Jr. saw Matt Murdock’s Daredevil take down Ultron using only a stick, which would be incredible to see in live-action.

In Marvel Comics, Ultron has taken on the likes of Clint Barton’s Hawkeye, Luke Cage and Marc Spector’s Moon Knight, among many others. He is an incredibly versatile villain that could be fighting cosmic heroes in deep space one day, and lower-level heroes on the streets of New York City the next. This would be amazing to see in the live-action MCU, and Matt Murdock’s Daredevil, as the face of the MCU’s street-level stories, would be the perfect vehicle for this storyline. Of course, this would come after his rematch against Wilson Fisk’s Kingpin.

3 Robert Reynolds’ Sentry

A Battle Between Ultron & The Sentry Would Be Destructive

Although Marvel Studios hasn’t officially confirmed this casting, Lewis Pullman is heavily suspected to be debuting as Robert “Bob” Reynolds’ Sentry in 2025’s Thunderbolts*. This creates the opportunity for some incredible cinematic moments from Marvel Comics to be adapted for the MCU, including Sentry’s destructive and intense battle against Ultron. This occurred during 2007’s Mighty Avengers series, which saw Ultron take over Iron Man’s armor, and use this new technology to kill Lindy Reynolds, the Sentry’s wife.

Marvel Actor May Have Just Confirmed He’s Playing Sentry In Thunderbolts*

Thunderbolts* actor Lewis Pullman confirms his character’s name, but doesn’t fully confirm who he’s playing. However, everything hints at Sentry.

The Sentry is often referred to as Marvel’s version of Superman, as he has an incomprehensible level of power akin to that of “one million exploding suns.” He also has a powerful and dark alter ego, the Void, which makes his debut in the MCU’s Phase 5 very exciting. The MCU would benefit from fully showing off the Sentry’s power during a battle with Ultron, especially if this is fueled by revenge following the death of his wife. This could be one of the most destructive, but spectacular, fights in the MCU’s history.

2 James “Logan” Howlett’s Wolverine

Wolverine Could Take On Ultron In An Honest-To-Goodness Age Of Ultron Adaptation

Hugh Jackman recently made his MCU debut as Wolverine in the eponymous Deadpool & Wolverine, and while it’s unclear whether he will return to play the clawed mutant again, Wolverine will surely have a bright future in the MCU. Logan is one of the most notable members of the X-Men team, so is very likely to be reinvented by Marvel Studios ahead of the MCU’s X-Men reboot. This creates the chance for Marvel Studios to adapt a more comic-accurate version of Marvel Comics’ Age of Ultron event from 2013.

Despite being titled
Age of Ultron
, 2015’s
Avengers: Age of Ultron
had no connection to the Marvel Comics story of the same name.

Wolverine plays a crucial role in Marvel Comics’ Age of Ultron, as he travels back in time to kill Hank Pym before he can create Ultron, averting the villain’s conquering of the world in the future. A similar story was told in Marvel Animation’s What If…? season 1, but Marvel Studios is yet to bring a faithful adaptation of Age of Ultron into live-action. Introducing the MCU’s official Wolverine could finally make this happen, pitting the iconic clawed X-Men member and his superpowered allies against one of Marvel’s most terrifying villains.

1 The New Avengers

The Avengers Deserve A Rematch Against Ultron

It’s very possible that Ultron could battle any number of these formidable heroes after his return to the MCU in the Vision series, but the most likely bet is that he’ll once again be pitted against the Avengers. In 2015, Ultron took on the original Avengers team, with the addition of the Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver and Vision, as well as, briefly, Rhodey’s War Machine. In the MCU’s future, however, Ultron will likely take on a very different Avengers team, one that hasn’t even been seen in action yet.

Who Are Avengers 5’s 60 Returning Characters? Predicting The Record-Breaking MCU Cast

Avengers 5 will reportedly include more than 60 returning characters, but what if we told you it could be more like 100?

The Avengers team has been inactive in the MCU since 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, but many new heroes have been introduced in recent years that could easily form the MCU’s New Avengers. This includes the likes of She-Hulk, Shang-Chi, Shuri’s Black Panther and Sam Wilson’s Captain America, while they could be joined by former members Thor, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man and more. This would make for a supremely powerful team to battle Ultron after the MCU’s Vision series.
