This summer, Marvel Studios created chaos when it announced that Robert Downey Jr. is making his back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actor is set to play supervillain Doctor Doom.

In a new appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast to promote his new series Kaos, Jeff Goldblum also addressed Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the MCU. Downey was an important part of the franchise, as he played Tony Stark/ Iron Man for over a decade until his ultimate sacrifice in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. The news of his return was met with mixed responses, but Goldblum believes it was “excellent news.”

RDJ’s comment was meant as a compliment, surely.

Goldblum made his Marvel debut in 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and his character got a bigger role in 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok. He also appeared in a deleted scene from 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder. Asked whether there is a possibility for him to reprise his role as the Grandmaster in a future Marvel project, the actor replied, “If there is, it’s in your cards, in the future cards.”

If there is, it’s in your cards, in the future cards.

While speaking about Marvel, the news of Downey’s return came back. “Excellent news,” Goldblum answered. “I think I vaguely heard the… yes, yes, I’d heard whispers on my peripheral. Yes, channels. Victor von Doom… I like that name. If my name had been Victor von Doom, I’d be a long further along than I am now. That’s a great name. Or Von to anything. Or Van.”

Robert Downey Jr. Credits Tobey Maguire With Getting Him Involved In Superhero Films

The Ironman actor credits the Spider-Man actor with opening the door to doing superhero films.

Marvel Studios revealed that Robert Downey Jr. will return to the MCU during this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. The news also included bringing back the Russo brothers, who helmed the two previous Avengers installments. Instead of returning as Iron Man by using a multiverse loophole, Downey will take a different role as the supervillain Doctor Doom. He is set to appear in the next two Avengers movies, 2026’s Avengers: Doomsday, which was previously known as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, and 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars.

Downey recently addressed his return as Doctor Doom, and explained how everything happened. “Feige and I kept in touch. We’re pals,” the actor explained during an appearance on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast. [Jon] Favreau and Feige and I have kept in touch. I’m [also] close with the Russo Brothers,” the actor explained. “I had an idea outside the cinematic universe for how I could be of service to what’s going on in the parks. Susan and I were sitting down with Feige at one point, and he said, ‘It just keeps occurring to me that if you were to come back’ and Susan was like, ‘Wait, wait, come back as what?'”

He continued, “Then we both realized over time that it was another thing that just disapproves any doubt anyone could ever have about [Fiege], a very sophisticated, creative thinker about how can we not go backwards, how can we not disappoint expectations, how can we continue to beat expectations, and he brought up Victor Von Doom, and I looked into this character, and I was like ‘Wow,’ and later on he goes, ‘Let’s get Victor Von Doom right, let’s get that right.’

Avengers: Doomsday will premiere in theaters on May 1, 2026, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars on May 7, 2027.
