X-Men writer/producer Simon Kinberg recently shared what he believes Marvel Studios should focus on the most when rebooting the beloved franchise for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Speaking with /Film, Kinberg — who wrote/produced multiple X-Men films between 2006 and 2019 as well as directed Dark Phoenix — revealed that Marvel should think in terms of character when developing its upcoming X-Men film reboot. “If I had one piece of advice, honestly, it is a very cliché thing, but it just is true: The strength of the X-Men is the characters,” he said. “As much as there’s great storytelling and great plot and incredible action sequences and all of those things are going to be required of the movies, as they are in the comics, what sets, for me, the X-Men apart is that they are the richest collection of characters in any comic book ever.”

Kinberg continued, “So it’s really about the characters that will get you the best actors. Those actors will bring those characters to life in a whole new way that honestly I cannot wait to see. I really am such a fan of what Marvel does and I’m obviously a massive, massive fan of the X-Men. Like the Star Wars movies. I read two comics when I was growing up religiously. I read others, but the religious ones were for me, Batman and X-Men.”
Mutants Are Beginning to Appear in the MCU
Marvel Studios reacquired the rights to X-Men in 2019 following Disney’s purchase of 20th Century Fox. Since then, the company has slowly begun to introduce mutants into the MCU, with characters like Professor X and Namor appearing in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, respectively. The MCU version of Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel was also revealed to be a mutant instead of an Inhuman. While Kamala becoming a mutant was a controversial change that split the Marvel fandom, it didn’t stop the comics from retconning Ms. Marvel as a mutant a year later.

Wolverine Might Not Be Part of the MCU’s X-Men Lineup
With the Writers Guild of America strike over, Marvel Studios has reportedly begun setting meetings for pitches from writers for its X-Men reboot. Marvel is apparently in no rush to fill the job since an X-Men reboot remains undated; however, the position will likely be filled by the top of 2024. At the time of writing, it is unknown which beloved mutants the reboot will focus on, although Wolverine is reportedly not in the mix to appear. Hugh Jackman, who portrayed Logan/Wolverine in the 20th Century Fox films, will reprise the fan-favorite character in the upcoming Deadpool 3 and possibly Avengers: Secret Wars.
Marvel Studios’ X-Men reboot does not yet have a release date.
