Summary
Marvel Studios is in the early stages of developing its first X-Men movie, and striking fan art imagines Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown as one of the MCU‘s potential star mutants. During Fox’s time with ownership of the X-Men IP for movies, two different generations of heroes became iconic in major mutant roles. Patrick Stewart’s Professor X led a team for several movies before handing off the reins to a younger stable of heroes in X-Men: First Class and its sequels. Now, with the possible exception of Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool and a few related characters, Marvel Studios will have to re-cast the X-men, which opens the door for dozens of new iconic versions of characters.
If Marvel Studios wants to differentiate its X-Men from the versions of the team that have appeared in movies so far, it may look to focus on characters that were either absent from Fox’s movies or were tangential to the central stars. In fan art posted to Deviant Art, artist CaptainIronWidow imagines Millie Bobby Brown as the X-Men’s Kitty Pryde, aka Shadowcat.
Kitty Pryde is one of several mutants from Fox’s X-Men franchise whom the MCU can finally redeem. Though Shadowcat appeared most prominently as the mutant who sent Wolverine back in time in X-Men: Days of Future Past, she was robbed of the true starring role in the story that she has in the Marvel Comics source material. With the ability to phase through solid objects, Kitty’s mutant ability is both useful and visually interesting on-screen. As a long-time X-Men, she seems like a perfect candidate for a bigger role in the MCU.
At this point, very little is known about the MCU’s upcoming X-Men movie. However, Marvel Studios has been slowly drip-feeding information about mutants into the franchise through the MCU Phases 4 and 5. Kamala Kahn was revealed to be a mutant in Ms. Marvel, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever‘s Namor is a mutant as well. Though he lives in a different reality, Patrick Stewart’s Professor X also had an extended cameo in Doctor Stange in the Multiverse of Madness. Furthermore, Secret Invasion reveals that Fury’s wife, Priscilla, has written a book titled Decoding the “Superhuman” Gene, a clear nod to mutants’ X-gene.
More information may be on the way soon, however, as Marvel Studios plans to listen to writers’ pitches for their X-Men movie soon and solidify a writer by early next year. That timeline seems to support the theory that X-Men will be part of the MCU Phase 7. However, details should come out far before that regarding which X-Men the movie will focus on – perhaps including Kitty Pryde.
