Marvel has unveiled four variant covers coming in November that celebrate the Star Wars holiday tradition, Life Day.

A Wookie tradition celebrating family, joy and harmony, Life Day will have its heartfelt values reflected on variant covers for Marvel’s Star Wars comics throughout November. Mike Del Mundo illustrated a Life Day variant for Star Wars #40, while Rod Reis drew covers for the franchise’s Darth Vader #40, Doctor Aphra #38 and Bounty Hunters #40. The variants pay tribute to the original Star Wars Holiday Special and include a variety of characters, for example, a young Anakin Skywalker sharing a meal with his mother Shmi, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Chef Gormaanda, Doctor Aphra and Krrsantan.

The Meaning of Star Wars’ Life Day

Life Day is a canonical holiday in the Star Wars Universe honoring Wookie culture. As its name implies, it involves a celebration of life and also involves a tradition of venturing to the Tree of Life on Kashyyyk. The holiday debuted in 1978’s Star Wars Holiday Special which told the story of Chewbacca and friends traveling to celebrate the holiday.

While the holiday special was originally mocked and is not considered canon, the holiday itself has been mentioned in other canonical forms of Star Wars media. The sentiments behind Life Day serve as a way for fans to get into the festive season and be thankful, and fans have designated Nov. 17 to be Life Day — chosen for its significance as the date the Star Wars Holiday Special premiered in 1978.

Marvel’s upcoming Life Day variant covers will hit comic book stores throughout November, with the first cover for Star Wars #40 releasing Nov. 1.
