Tom Hiddleston became an overnight star after playing God of Mischief, Loki, from Asgard, in Marvel’s blockbuster The Avengers. He then reprised his role in various Marvel movies (Thor and Avenger series) and spin-offs (Marvel’s TV series What If). And, not to mention the stand-alone series, Loki. However, there are various non-Marvel movies and shows that the blue-eyed British hunk has starred in. With Tom bringing more mischief for our amusement with the second season of Loki, here’s a look at some of his other known and lesser-known works.

1. The Night Manager – Amazon Prime Video

Based on author John le Carre’s acclaimed eponymous novel, Tom won a Golden Globe Award for his noteworthy performance as Jonathan Pine, a former British soldier turned hotel night manager. The suspenseful plot follows Jonathan, who is hired by British intelligence to go undercover and infiltrate a notorious, international arms dealer Richard’s (Hugh Laurie) gang. Slowly and steadily he gains Richard’s trust and works toward his downfall. As the narrative progresses, Jonathan also stumbles across secrets related to British intelligence and the CIA. Tom steals the spotlight and the heart-racing intense drama is a must-watch if you like spy thrillers.

2. Crimson Peak – Amazon Prime Video

Set in the 19th century and directed by auteur Guillermo del Toro, this gripping gothic horror, romance drama centres around Edith Cushing (Mia Wasikowska), an aspiring author, Edith. She falls in love with and marries Sir Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston), a charming but enigmatic aristocrat from England, despite her father’s misgivings. She moves to Allerdale Hall, a decaying mansion in rural England, with Thomas and his mysterious sister, Lady Lucille Sharpe (Jessica Chastain). The plot takes an eerie turn when Edith starts seeing ghosts and experiencing unexplainable supernatural events. She uncovers unsettling secrets about Thomas and Lucille’s past along with the numerous vindictive evil forces that are after her life. The chilling climax leaves you shocked as Edith confronts the true horrors that lurk within the mansion.

3. Kong: Skull Island – Amazon Prime Video

Boasting a star-studded cast featuring Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Samuel L Jackson, John Goodman, John C Reilly, and others, the movie is the 11th instalment in the King Kong franchise and a part of the shared MonsterVerse cinematic universe which also includes Godzilla. The movie follows a group of scientists and soldiers travelling to the mystical and recently discovered Skull Island in search of primitive creatures. Part of the expedition is former British Special Air Force Captain James Conrad (Tom) and anti-war photographer Mason Weaver (Brie Larson). On landing, the group finds itself in a terrifying mess and learns that the island is home to the legendary giant ape Kong, whom the indigenous tribal people worship. As the group navigates the treacherous terrain, they encounter terrifying monsters called Skullcrawlers, whom only Kong can kill. Chaos ensues when the battle for dominance between the creatures and humans ensues. The edge-of-your-seat thriller takes you on an unforgettable adventurous journey.

4. I Saw the Light – Apple TV

This biographical drama chronicles the rise and fall of the legendary singer and songwriter Hank Williams, who died at the age of 29, played exceptionally well by the versatile Tom Hiddleston. The plot follows Hank as he navigates his newfound stardom, turbulent marriage to Audrey (Elizabeth Olsen), who was also his manager, and addiction to drugs and alcohol. 9. The movie gives a poignant glimpse of Hank’s musical prowess and his struggles in striking a balance between his professional and troubled personal life. The moving drama is a must-watch for Tom’s impeccable portrayal of the late musician.

5. Unrelated – Amazon Prime Video

Forty-something Anna (Kathryn Worth) is disenchanted with her life and takes a break away from her boyfriend by going on a vacation with her friends and their teenage children. Despite being surrounded by a picturesque setting, Anna feels isolated and alone. She seeks adventure by spending time with the teens and is especially drawn to Oakley (Tom), the son of her best friend’s cousin. While she goes on a wild night filled with marijuana and alcohol, the simmering sexual tension between the two is ignited. However, a turn of events forces Anna to confront her inner demons and is alienated by both the adults and the teens. Despite the movie being more centred around Anna, Tom gets considerable screen time as Oakley and brings to the screen a contemplative commentary on human relationships and their complexities.

6. High-Rise – YouTube

Based on the 1975 novel of the same name by author J.G. Ballard, this dystopian thriller is set in a high-rise apartment building where residents are divided based on their class – the rich are on the higher floors and lower-class residents at the bottom, and indirect commentary of the world order. Dr Robert Laing (Tom Hiddleston) takes residence as the new tenant on a middle-level floor. As the narrative advances, Laing finds himself embroiled in a peculiar environment, escalating social tensions, and hedonism, leading to chaos and troublesome breakdown of deterioration of the infrastructure. This eventually causes fights among the tenants, leading to bloody mayhem and Laing being driven to insanity. The movie is a powerful critique of urban living and anarchy.

7. The Essex Serpent – Apple TV

This period romance drama is based on the acclaimed novel of the same name by author Sarah Perry. The plot follows Cora Seaborne (Claire Danes), a widow, who relocates to Essex to unearth the rumours of a fascinating legendary serpent. While continuing her quest, she forms a bond with local pastor Will (Tom), despite their polar opposite beliefs. As the plot progresses, the two are drawn to each other. Her life takes a drastic turn following a catastrophe and the townspeople blame her for bringing the creature out of hiding and causing harm.
