Warning! Spoilers ahead for Power Man: Timeless #3!

Marvel hero Sentry is about to make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in the upcoming Thunderbolts* film, and that means so is his dark opposite, the Void, who has just received a major upgrade in its latest comic appearance; finally, after years of being tethered to his heroic other half, a far-flung future version of the Void has received its own physical form, and it has Hulk powers.

Power Man: Timeless #3, written by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing, with art by Bernard Chang, introduces a critical evolution of the Void/Sentry dynamic. This development is notable in its own right, given the character history of the hero/villain, who famously share one body, but also because of its timing in advance of the imminent arrival of the character in the MCU.

With Thunderbolts* closing Phase Five of the MCU, fans have already begun to speculate about a pivotal role for Sentry/Void in Phase Six.

The Void Gets Its Own Physical Form, Changing Its Dynamic With The Sentry Ahead Of Their MCU Debut

The Sentry has often been hyped as the most powerful hero in the Marvel Universe, and similarly, the Void has been called the most devastating villain. In Marvel Comics, “most powerful” is always an open-ended question, and can change from story-to-story, and even issue-to-issue. However, the MCU provides an opportunity to the Sentry/Void to truly claim these roles, in the process ascending to a higher echelon of not just on-screen “power,” but more importantly, mainstream popular culture recognition. In this sense, Sentry could truly claim his oft-cited title as “Marvel’s Superman.”

The possibility for the Void and the Sentry to coexist as distinct entities could, in due time, become a plot point in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Since their introduction twenty-five years ago, however, the conceit of the Sentry and the Void is that they are two sides of the same individual, constantly at war with himself. The original Sentry series was as much a psychological study as an action-packed superhero origin story. That is why the Void’s physical manifestation in Power Man: Timeless #3 stands out as a progression of the characters’ lore, especially considering its cinematic implications; the possibility for the Void and the Sentry to coexist as distinct entities could, in due time, become a plot point in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Thunderbolts* Introducing The Sentry/Void Is Crucial For The MCU’s Long-Term Future

Power Man: Timeless #3 Sets A Precedent

The Void has at times been depicted as nigh-unstoppable, and, in fact, its only true weakness is the fact that it is tethered to the Sentry. If nothing else, the introduction of an independent Void in Power Man: Timeless #3, one wielding the powers of the Hulk, no less, raises the stakes for this look at the potential far future of the Marvel Universe. Beyond that, however, it could also have introduced a device through which a Sentry/Void conflict could become the centerpiece for a future Phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The Sentry is a godlike superhuman, but his dark half the Void is an ancient force so terrifying, it makes the good guy looks like an afterthought.

Fans already know that Thunderbolts* is just the first step into the MCU for Sentry/Void, as the character has already been confirmed to have a role in Avengers: Doomsday. It is possible the Void could be the even greater threat that forces the MCU’s Doctor Doom to work with his Avengers adversaries; alternatively, the Void could be the next great villain after Doom’s role in Phase Six is complete. While fans can only speculate for now, it is important to remember that any piece of Marvel Comics lore can potentially make a major impact in a future MCU story, as the Sentry could soon prove.
