Warning: Spoilers for Daredevil #20!Marvel just switched up Daredevil’s costume, but the publisher has seemingly made it clear the redesign will only be temporary. The previous issue of Daredevil marked the official end of the nearly two-year-long arc pitting Matt Murdock against the Seven Deadly Sins, which culminated in an epic finish, claiming Bullseye as a casualty, in the process, while opening the door for a new era for Daredevil.

Daredevil #20 by Saladin Ahmed and Jose Luis, features the return of the Man Without Fear’s fan-favorite black armor. The suit debuted in Daredevil #321, written by D.G. Chichester, with art by Scott McDaniel, and for much of the 1990s was the hero’s primary suit of choice. It helped Daredevil keep pace with an edgy decade of comic book culture, and while many fans embraced it, not everyone was a supporter of the suit.

In fact, Daredevil’s armor still elicits mixed reactions, which may be enough for Marvel to nix it sooner rather than later.

Daredevil’s Classic 90s Armor Returns, But Marvel Is Already Make It Clear The Move Is Temporary

After his final confrontation with the Seventh Deadly Sin of Wrath, Daredevil’s classic suit is torn to shreds, forcing him to revert to his old 90s costume while his red one is being repaired. Before he has the chance to put his old suit to good use, he’s captured by men in hazmat suits while out as Matt Murdock. His kidnappers lift Matt’s limp body and notice the heavy weight of his costume, but rather than check to unveil his Daredevil persona, the men just shrug it off and assume Matt is some “freak” in bondage gear.

Some readers would assume that Daredevil’s costume is a temporary one considering how it returned, but it may be retired once more, even sooner than expected, given how fast Marvel is ready to dismiss it.

It is a funny line, certainly, but this throwaway joke is also telling in regard to how quickly Marvel is already making moves to downplay one of Daredevil’s most iconic outfits, especially in its first issue back on-panel. Some readers would assume that Daredevil’s costume is a temporary one considering how it returned, but it may be retired once more, even sooner than expected, given how fast Marvel is ready to dismiss it. Beyond just how temporary it is, Marvel may recognize that a suit like this for Daredevil has little to no business in a 2025 comic book.

Does Daredevil’s ’90s Armor Have A Future On “Born Again?”

Don’t Get Your Hopes Up

Daredevil’s 90s suit is a product of an edgy period of time for comic books. Comics displayed a level of grit and edginess that may be considered laughable now, or at least wouldn’t be taken seriously to the degree it was thirty years ago. By today’s standards, the suit has no place in Daredevil’s comics as much as it has a place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That may be the exact reason why the MCU has yet to debut this suit for Daredevil onscreen, and for the same reasons seem unlikely to showcase it.

Daredevil #20 is available now from Marvel Comics.
