Kevin Smith made a huge splash in comics when he rebooted Daredevil in the late 90’s, and now the filmmaker is returning to Marvel with an all-new Spider-Man story. Smith is just one name in an all-star creative line-up which will be gathered together in one oversized special set to be released in June.
Announced via Marvel.com, Giant-Size Spider-Man #1 will feature three stories from the creative teams of Kevin Smith & Giuseppe Camuncoli, Al Ewing & Mark Buckingham and Chip Zdarsky & Cafu.
Paying homage to the “Giant-Size” issues released by Marvel in the seventies, the new special will also contain the first appearance of an all-new character, one that Marvel promises will “play a big role in the near future.”

Giant-Size Spider-Man #1 Has An All-Star Creative Line-Up
All three stories promise to be a celebration of Spider-Man in all his incarnations. Smith and Camuncoli’s story features a team-up between Spidey and the Fantastic Four that Marvel claims “will have your heart beating in overdrive and your sides hurting from how much you’re laughing.” Ewing & Buckingham’s story will take place over decades and feature Spider-Man teaming up with his best friends in the Marvel Universe. And Zdarsky and Cafu’s story will introduce the brand-new character to the Marvel Universe, setting up a major story in the future.

Kevin Smith helped to change the direction of comics when he was recruited by Joe Quesada and Jimmy Palmiotti to revamp Daredevil as a part of their Marvel Knights initiative in 1998. The resulting story made Daredevil a top-selling title once more, and helped to reinvigorate Marvel after perhaps the company’s lowest point following their declaration of bankruptcy in the 1990’s. While Smith has periodically written comics in the decades since, it has been some time since his name has graced a Marvel Comic, so it’s nice to see the writer return to the House of Ideas.
