Marvel Comics is set to revisit one of the most pivotal storylines in the history of the X-Men franchise – and at the center of the “Dark Phoenix Saga” this time around will be Kamala Khan, the powerful young mutant hero, and one of the fastest rising stars in the publisher’s vast roster of superpowered characters.

As officially revealed by Marvel, Giant-Size Dark Phoenix Saga #1 – written by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing, with art by Rod Reis – will deliver another one of the franchise’s classic time travel storyline, one in which Marvel promises that “the story [fans] know” will be “destroyed in front of [Kamala’s] eyes,” suggesting that the one-shot special could potentially lead to an altered status quo for the X-Men moving forward.

The Giant-Size Dark Phoenix Saga follows up on this year’s Giant-Size X-Men, which inserts Kamala into the classic tale that brought characters like Wolverine, Storm, and more into the franchise’s fold.

Kamala Khan is, of course, one of Marvel’s most valuable young protagonistsher “death” several years back was not well-received by fans, or critics, but her subsequent resurrection and confirmation as a mutant has generated a more positive response. She has had a prominent role in the X-Men franchise since then, including a starring role in the canceled-too-soon NYX book, but the reveal of her role in the upcoming Giant-Size series of one-shots makes it clear that Marvel has far more grandiose plans for the character.

Marvel Is Gearing Up to Revisit X-Men’s Most Iconic Moments, Fueling MCU Rumors With Help From Kamala Khan

Marvel is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the beloved Giant-Size X-Men with an epic new limited series exploring the X-Men’s iconic history.

Giant-Size Dark Phoenix Saga is just the second announced title of a five-part event, so fans know that following her face-off with Dark Phoenix, Kamala will be vaulted across time to another vital moment in X-history. What remains unknown, and open to fan speculation, is how these stories will recontextualize – and possibly reinvent – that history, either by making tangible changes to X-Men lore, or at least by upending fans’ long-held understanding of the series’ canon. Either way, it is a deliberate attempt to more fully enmesh Kamala Khan in the past, present, and future of X-Men.

Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing are among the most highly-regarded writers in the comic book industry right now – having just concluded the aforementioned NYX series for Marvel, while also continuing their groundbreaking tenure on IDW’s Star Trek comic series – and as such, they are on the short list of creators who fans can trust to do this Dark Phoenix Saga redux at least some measure of justice. Kelly and Lanzing spoke about the original story’s impact, and what they can potentially add to it, noting:

The Dark Phoenix Saga is one of the enduring high watermarks not just for X-Men comics, but superhero stories as a whole. Claremont and Byrne changed the game with this story – and 45 years later, it’s still the kind of story you can return to again and again for renewed depth and brilliance.

But what’s most exciting is digging into Jean Grey’s mindset during one of her strangest, darkest hours – as she finds a new friend in Kamala Khan. Jean Grey’s place among her fellow X-Men will get a whole new level of character and meaning from the wild, cosmic events of GIANT-SIZE DARK PHOENIX SAGA #1.

In other words, Kelly and Lanzing’s trademark creative ambition will be on full display.

If the overall plot of this Giant-Size event didn’t make it clear enough, this definitively confirms that Marvel has major plans to shake the foundations of the X-Men franchise.

Another tantalizing tidbit for hardcore X-fans is the confirmation that Giant-Size Dark Phoenix Saga #1 will also include a back-up story – written by Steve Foxe, with art by Lucas Werneck – which will elucidate “the hidden secret that binds Scott Summer and Jean Grey together.” If the overall plot of this Giant-Size event didn’t make it clear enough, this definitively confirms that Marvel has major plans to shake the foundations of the X-Men franchise, in ways that will go far beyond Kamala Khan’s starring role in the series.
