The following contains major spoilers for West Coast Avengers #4, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Ultron just got a new look, and it might just be the most ridiculous he has ever agreed to.

West Coast Avengers #4 opens to find the eponymous team discussing the threat posed by The One, a version of Ultron who has begun spreading his own living Gospel by transforming terminally ill humans into cybernetically enhanced beings immune to the diseases that once plagued them. Of course, this has all been complicated by the presence of another Ultron on the West Coast Avengers’ own roster, who at least one member of the team still doesn’t trust. When Firestar points out how little Ultron looks like a member of the team, Tony Stark takes it upon himself to remedy that minor issue, and all by giving the former mechanized menace an Avengers-level makeover.

While the villainous robot known as Ultron had been seen in the guise of the Crimson Cowl the issue prior, it wasn’t until 1968’s Avengers #55 by Roy Thomas and John Buscema that Ultron’s true identity was revealed. Created by the Avengers’ own Hank Pym, Ultron was designed to be the greatest achievement in artificial intelligence. Although this soon proved to be true, that revelation came in the form of Ultron’s attempt at lashing out against its creator and destroying Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, which itself was a result of Ultron’s sentience spiraling into a twisted, murderous outlook on the world as a whole.

After decades of facing off against the Avengers, transforming and reinventing itself dozens of times, and suffering just as many losses, Ultron was given the chance to merge with its creator into a single entity. This came at the apparent expense of Hank’s life, all while giving rise to a deadlier, more unpredictable Ultron than ever before. What followed was a series of time-hopping, reality-warping adventures that culminated in Ultron’s ascension to near-godhood and subsequent defeat at the hands of four versions of Ant-Man all hailing from different generations.

One MCU Fan-Favorite Is Officially Marvel’s New Citizen V

A fan-favorite from the Marvel Cinematic Universe is back in action in the pages of Marvel Comics, and she’s already killing it as Citizen V.

For a time, it seemed as if Ultron was gone for good, though that was far from the truth. In recent years, it has been revealed that Ultron didn’t just survive as a single entity, but as countless iterations of himself. Fortunately, only three of these have survived the events that unfolded since their creation. While the version of Ultron who joined the West Coast Avengers has proven itself to be a hero through-and-through at every possible turn, it might be the only truly benevolent Ultron left standing. Even with The One technically saving numerous lives, there is no guarantee that his Gospel of Ultron isn’t just a budding robot army preparing to launch another attempted takeover of the entire planet.
