The following contains major spoilers for Avengers #23, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

An obscure and underrated team of Marvel Comics mercenaries are officially gunning for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

Avengers #23 opens to find the eponymous team of heroes in the middle of a botched attempt to steal away with a priceless artifact from within the cosmic casino of the Elder of the Universe known as the Grandmaster. Despite their best attempts, the Avengers have been beaten to their intended prize by Kang the Conqueror and Felicia Hardy, better known as the Black Cat. Worse still, Kang also took the time to employ the multiversal mercenary squad known as Technet to stand in the way of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, and they are more than capable of doing just that in a truly unsettling fashion.

Led by the hulking Gatecrasher, the interdimensional bounty hunter team known as Technet was introduced all the way back in the opening story from 1985’s Captain Britain #3, “Flotsam and Jetsam,” by writer Jamie Delano and artist Alan Davis. Consisting of powerhouses including the reality-warping Joyboy, reptilian Bodybag, and high-flying Fascination, Technet made their debut after being hired by the Opal Luna Saturnyne variant Sat-Yr-Nin to hunt down a variant of Captain Britain, though they quickly turned against their employer’s malevolent forces.

In the years that followed, Technet has faced off against all manner of foes, including alien Werewolves, 14th century Peruvian horrors, and even the mutant heroes of Excalibur. While the members of Technet aren’t necessarily villains themselves, that hasn’t stopped them from coming into conflict with some of the most iconic heroes in the Marvel Universe at almost every turn. In more recent years, Technet have seemingly made it a point to remove themselves from the goings-on of Earth and its fantastical counterparts by focusing on more cosmic endeavors, such as hunting down the Guardians of the Galaxy’s very own Rocket Raccoon.

An MCU Fan-Favorite Reveals the Truth Behind Hellverine’s Infernal Mission

The son of Wolverine has finally learned the truth about why the forces of Hell are back on Earth, and it could be the end of mutantkind.

Technet’s return couldn’t have come at a worse time for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, who have been desperately searching for any answers they can find about the fabled Missing Moment or the harrowing Tribulation Events that have heralded its eventual arrival. As far as they know, the Missing Moment may as well be the single most important second in the history of the Marvel Universe. Unfortunately, not even the likes of Kang the Conqueror have been able to uncover any information about the Missing Moment itself, let alone where or when it might be, whereas villains like the mysterious Myrrdin and his futuristic Knights have had great success in keeping things that way.
