Warning: Contains spoilers for Phoenix #7!!

The Phoenix Force and Jean Grey have been practically synonymous for decades; they are inextricably bound, with the universe constantly bringing the two back together until making it clear that there will never truly be one without the other. As Jean attempts to deal with Thanos and his Warlock’s Eye, desperation drives her to transfer the Phoenix’s power to the warrior Adani in an attempt to stop Marvel’s Mad Titan.

Phoenix #7 – written by Stephanie Phillips, with art by Marco Renna – features Jean Grey struggling to secure the upper hand over Thanos, as he’s empowered by an artifact called the Warlock’s Eye, which significantly boosts his already incredible power.

Their battle leaves Jean trapped and desperate for a way out as Thanos’ forces “devour existence itself,” and her only existing psychic connection is to Adani, a sworn enemy of the Phoenix – leaving her no other choice but to endow this adversary with the very cosmic powers she is opposed to.

With no other options, Jean sends a mental plea to Adani, who insists that she can help by using the Phoenix’s power to remove Thanos’ control. The plan works, but introducing a new Phoenix comes with many complications. The warrior Adani was introduced back in Phoenix #1, and was quickly established as no fan of the primordial entity. She is a lifelong member of the Universal Church of Truth, and she mistakenly blames the Phoenix for her father’s death.

Few people have been able to manage theincredible might of the Phoenix – now, the question is how Marvel’s latest character to be elevated to cosmic powerhouse status will handle it.

In truth, Adani’s father was slaughtered by Perrikus, a Dark God determined to destroy the Phoenix and willing to go to great lengths to do so. Adani’s already turbulent history with the entity of life and rebirth would make her a questionable host at the best of times, and Jean’s desperation to stop Thanos didn’t leave much room for proper consideration before allowing Adani to take her place. Historically, few people have been able to manage theincredible might of the Phoenix – now, the question is how Marvel’s latest character to be elevated to cosmic powerhouse status will handle it.

Jean Grey Is The Phoenix’s Greatest Host – But Empowering Adani Complicates Things For The Marvel Icon

The Phoenix Ongoing Series Serves Up A Curveball

Those directly descended from Jean Grey, like Rachel Summers, are often its most adequate hosts for the Phoenix, but Adani does not have that working in her favor. Even in a short-term sense, attempting to control it could drive Adani mad and cause catastrophic damage. Plenty have failed to contain its might before, and Adani’s existing hatred for the entity will likely influence how the two work together. Thanos, at the very least, seems to think that Jean made a grave mistake in transferring her power to a known enemy.

X-Men fans have debated whether Jean Grey and the Phoenix are one and the same, and now a Marvel editor has weighed in on this hot topic.

Although Jean willingly gave up her power for Adani to handle Thanos, a new host doesn’t change the fact that Jean is its preferred host. She is the reason the Phoenix exists in its current state, and the close bond they share allowed her to turn the Phoenix from a force of destruction into the core of her cosmic heroism. Being separated again may quickly change that. The Phoenix Force will likely return to Jean Grey, but by turning Adani into a new host, she has opened the door for incredible potential destruction until that happens.
