The following contains major spoilers for TVA #2, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

One the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s best original characters has finally stepped into the pages of Marvel Comics.

TVA #2 picks up shortly after the previous issue left off, with the latest addition to the eponymous Time Variance Authority, Spider-Gwen, engulfed in a whole new mystery. While there aren’t any firm leads as to why exactly people’s innermost fears are being brought to life, there is someone who might be able to help get to the bottom of things. Better yet, Sylvie Laufeydottir is already well aware of the problem at hand, just as she is already well on her way towards figuring it all out.

Though the Time Variance Authority came into renewed prominence with the release of Marvel Studios’ Loki series on Disney+, it had already been a part of the wider Marvel mythos for decades before making its small screen debut. First seen in the pages of 1986’s Thor #371 by Walter Simonson and Sal Buscema, the TVA is a sprawling bureaucracy comprised of thousands if not millions of agents and administrative personnel across countless dimensions and realities. Primarily made up of custom-made employees who are born and bred to fill specific roles, the TVA is an unnerving if arguably necessary part of the Marvel Universe as a whole on its most esoteric levels.

Like the TVA as it stands today, the interdimensional variant of the Asgardian Trickster God known as Sylvie Laufeydottir made her first appearance during the pilot episode of Marvel Studios’ Loki. Portrayed by Sophia Di Martino, Sylvie hails from a timeline in which she was stolen away from her family at a young age by the TVA, only to escape and make a life for herself as a Multiversal runaway. When Sylvie finally crossed paths with the series’ titular Loki, the pair embarked upon a quest to uncover the harrowing truths behind the TVA and dismantle everything it had built on top of those lies.

Wolverine Is Going to War With the Son of Another X-Men Icon

One of the most beloved mutant heroes of all time is dead and gone in the world of Wolverine: Revenge, but his son is only just getting started.

At the heart of Marvel Comics’ current TVA series is a horrifying series of occurrences in which peoples’ worst fears have become manifest in the real world. Though the TVA initially believed this to be the result of mass hallucinations, it quickly became apparent that the threat was all too real. Since then, numerous agents have stepped up to dive into this infernal mystery, including Spider-Gwen, Captain Carter, and even the Son of Satan himself, Daimon Hellstrom. Despite usually dealing with more overtly supernatural affairs, Daimon’s presence has given the TVA’s team of in-house superheroes just the kind of edge they need in the field, whereas more genuienly nefariuos forces are still at work within the walls of the TVA itself.
