Both the Savage Land and Subterranea are among the oldest locales in the overarching Marvel Comics mythos. Subterranea was the first of these to be seen, with its comic book debut taking place all the way back in the pages of 1940’s Marvel Mystery Comics #10 in Paul Gustavson and Ray Gill’s story, “The Ghouls of the Blue Ridge Mountains.” This vast kingdom rests beneath the surface of the Earth itself, and has been home to numerous iconic Marvel Comics characters, including the entirety of the Deviants at one point.

The Savage Land made its own comic book debut almost exactly a year after Subterranea’s own, and also in the pages of Marvel Mystery Comics twelve issues later. Introduced as the Land Where Time Stands Still in Joe Simon and Jack Kirby’s story, “Khor, the Black Sorcerer,” the Savage Land is a vast tropical wilderness hidden within the heart of Antarctica. In the Savage Land, towering dinosaurs and terrifying beasts roam free. In the years since it first appeared, the Savage Land has been the setting for dozens of different stories, many of which have involved the likes of Spider-Man and the X-Men.

Marvel’s New Ultimate Wolverine Just Recreated a Classic MCU Moment

One iconic moment from the Marvel Cinematic Universe was just remade in terrifying fashion by the new Ultimate Wolverine.

The amalgamation of the Savage Land and Subterranea is just one of countless subtle changes that have been made to the usual status quo within the bounds of the reality of Earth-6160, better known as the modern Ultimate Universe. In this timeline, the villainous Reed Richards known as the Maker used his foreknowledge of world events and the lives of various superheroes and villains to effectively rewrite history in his own image. In doing so, the Maker completely avoided the origins of iconic heroes such as Spider-Man, although is defeat at the hands of Kang and Howard Stark opened the door for the young Tony Stark to try and set things right by bringing the heroes his world should have had back, albeit several decades too late.
