Gambit has many reputations as a thief, a ladies’ man, and a Ragin’ Cajun, but one that has perhaps been left unsaid is a reputation as a sharp dresser. Given that Gambit seems to have many female fans in the Marvel Universe, having had numerous love interests, it is not all that crazy that he would have some sartorial skills.

His eye-catching outfits no doubt did not ever hurt his chances of getting with his love and eventual wife, Rogue. Different universes have changed up Gambit’s outfits while still keeping his debonair or snappy attire. Moreover, even in Earth-616, Gambit has seen some outfit changes that offer some variety while showinf his personality and past through his clothing.

White Tux

X-Men ’97

In the animated series X-Men ’97, the Genosha Gala set up by Magneto sees the X-Men characters decked out in their black-tie best. As nice as everyone looks, the episode is very emotionally charged. Don’t worry, no spoiler alert is necessary, but what must be noted is Gambit’s fantastic outfit, as the episode sees the usually low-key dresser all gussied up.

In a white tuxedo, Gambit looks exceptionally classy, and it’s a look that fans do not get to see him in often but wish that they would. A far cry from fingerless gloves, Gambit trades his trench coat for a white tuxedo jacket. In one of Gambit’s most important episodes in X-Men ’97, it is only appropriate that his watershed moment is captured when he is looking his finest.

Classic Blue and Yellow

Uncanny X-Men #274 by Chris Claremont, Jim Lee, Scott Williams, Joe Rosas, and Pat Brosseau

After members of different X-teams have been kidnapped, Storm is decided to be the X-Men’s new leader. In a show of solidarity, the team under Storm all wear the classic blue and gold suits that are usually worn as training suits, including two members who usually like to do things their own ways, including their fashion: Wolverine and Gambit.

Having put aside his usual suit, Gambit is every part the team player when he dons the same costume as his teammates. While he may be wearing the same blue and gold suit as everyone else, he still retains his individual style thanks to him wearing his duster, which he seems to be borderline inseparable from, as well as his satchel, which carries his card decks. The contrasting blue and gold of the suit is incredibly eye-catching while also showing that Gambit can and will be a very willing participant when it comes to being in a team.

Excalibur Suit

Excalibur #1 by Tini Howard, Marcus To, Erick Arciniega, and Cory Petit

A Krakoa-era storyline saw Gambit as well as Rogue, Jubilee, and Apocalypse traveling to Otherworld to participate in missions and fights that involve other Marvel characters. Given that Excalibur (sometimes called Captain Britain Corps) is a team, they wear attire that communicates that they are working together. All members have black and brown throughout their costumes and a red X somewhere on them.

However, while the costumes obviously tie them all together, each member retains aspects of their individual costumes that show that while they are working together, they still retain their individual identities. Gambit’s color scheme lets everyone know he is associated with the Excalibur team, but he still has his duster coat and his headset. Consequently, the irreverent Gambit is able to be a team member without sacrificing his individuality.

Original Ultimate Universe Outfit

Ultimate X-Men #13 by Chuck Austen, Esad Ribić, John Livesay, Jonathan D. Smith, and Sharpefont

In the Ultimate Universe, the Fenris Twins train Gambit to fight while also making him a suit that contains his powers while simultaneously giving Gambit better control over his abilities. Using his new stylish suit and abilities to kidnap Rogue on behalf of Fenris to recruit her, things do not go exactly to plan, but it does sway Rogue to team up with Gambit and leave the X-Men. It’s probably all due to his super cool suit.

With a brown coat that gives his usual trench coat a serious run for its money, Gambit’sUltimate look also seems like a more off-duty, low-key ensemble compared to his other suits. This change in style makes sense for this story, because Gambit never gets involved with the heroics of the X-Men in this universe and instead spends his days robbing banks and casinos with Rogue.

Civil War Costume with Hood

Civil War #3 Charles Soule, Leinil Francis Yu, Gerry Alanguilan, Sunny Gho, and Joe Sabino

An antagonist to Spider-Man and his reinforcements in this Civil War comic, Remy LeBeau is Agent LeBeau as part of the Punishers alongside Agent Baldwin, Hellcat, and the Punisher. Given that Gambit is basically a villain in this Civil War redux, he has a suit that fits his role. Looking more like Doctor Doom than his usual get up, Gambit’s Civil War costume is dark and serious with a hood that adds a mysterious air to the already intimidating Gambit.

A dark greenish slate color is the hue of Gambit’s new coat and hood, a more moody color scheme compared to his other get-ups. Given that this Civil War series deals with the themes of determinism and free will, it makes total sense that Gambit’s costume would be darker to match with the dark tone of the allegory present in the storyline.

Serval Costume

All-New X-Factor #1 by Peter David, Carmine Di Giandomenico, Lee Loughridge, and Cory Petit

Serval Industries is a company dedicated to helping people, so it is not all that surprising that they took ownership of the X-Factor team for a time. Much like how a NASCAR car has sponsor logos plastered all over it, Serval has branded the X-Factor’s new uniforms to have – what else – a serval on them, of course.

Taking on some of the colors that are found in the wild cat, the new suits have a yellow-golden color mixed with some reddish-brown outerwear in Gambit’s case. The team’s costumes match, except Gambit’s beloved duster, which has been tailored to end at his waist rather than at his ankles, leaving no question as to the individuals being a team. To finish the look, all the team members have bubble goggles that add a sci-fi-looking touch to the outfits.

Shi’ar Suit

Uncanny X-Men #342 by Scott Lobdell, Joe Madureira, Tim Townsend, Steve Buccellato, and Richard Starkings

When in space, the typical outfits will not do, as Uncanny X-men #342 showed readers. Six of the X-Men have journeyed to space, including Bishop, Gambit, Joseph, Rogue, and Trish Tilby, courtesy of the Shi’ar Royal Star Cruiser. The mission is undertaken to help the Shi’ar by fighting for their team. Due to the mission taking place in outer space and requiring fighting alongside the warrior people, the Shi’ar, Gambit’s suit is in line with the purposes of their assignment.

The Shi’ar armor fits him like a glove, complimenting Gambit’s overall look. Likewise, the blue, black, and silver of the costume are a dynamic color scheme that still retains the ability to blend in to the surroundings in space without relying on just one color on its own. Moreover, the red Shi’ar logo adds to Gambit’s costume motif a pop of red that plays off his red eyes.

Age of X Suit

Age of X: Alpha #1 by Mike Carey, Mirco Pierfederici, Gabriel Hernández Walta, Carlo Barberi, Paul Davidson, Paco Diaz, Walden Wong, Brian Reber, Matt Milla, Antonio Fabela, and Joe Caramagna

In the Earth-11326 reality, mutants became overpopulated, which fostered a lot of mutant discrimination and anti-mutant propaganda. As a result, the U.S. government passed a piece of legislation that gave mutant hunting robots free rein, enabling large scale killings of mutants. As a result, mutants face near extinction and are at war to maintain their remaining numbers.

Given that Age of X takes place in a post-apocalyptic world, Gambit’s suit reflects the reality of his situation. His Age of X suit is streamlined and militaristic, almost like something a futuristic soldier would wear. In a sleek dark silver suit, Gambit takes the rare monochromatic approach. However, Gambit does tend to like color, so he puts a flair on this tough armor suit with a red armband with an X on it. Likewise, he has his trademark bandanna around his head, keeping his long hair out of his face.

2

Thieves Guild Suit

Astonishing X-Men #1 by Charles Soule, Jim Cheung, Guillermo Ortego, Walden Wong, Mark Morales, Rain Beredo, Richard Isanove, and Clayton Cowles

Thieves must be able to slip by without getting noticed in order to steal without getting caught, which is something the Thieves Guild of New Orleans is well aware of. Consequently, Gambit’s suit in the Thieves’ Guild reflects the need for stealth and prowess that is essential in thieving.

A black suit, as any good burglar would have, forms the basis of the suit, with some outfit accents that are found in most if not all Remy LeBeau outfits, such as leg bands that carry some of his necessary items and a bandanna around his neck; his Thieves Guild one being red because it would not be Gambit without some sort of pop of color. Giving him full mobility, the stealth suit of the Thieves Guild is all the suit Gambit needs to accomplish his ends.

The Original (and Best) ’90s Costume

Gambit Created by Jim Lee, Chris Claremont, and Mike Collins for Uncanny X-Men #266

In the look everyone knows and loves, Gambit’s iconic ’90s outfit sees the sometime thief, sometime hero dressed in his classic brown duster coat, pink and blue suit, headpiece, and fingerless gloves. As a result, Gambit’s look is one only the unique and incomparable Gambit could pull off. His ’90s outfit is often fans’ favorite Gambit costume and has consequently been the outfit seen on Gambit in different adaptations.

A recent example includes Gambit’s outfit being captured in the live action Deadpool and Wolverine as well as the 2024 animated series X-Men ’97. Likewise, Gambit’s ’90s look is typically the jumping off point for the rest of his different costumes, depending on the events of the stories or different character variants. While Gambit may have cycled through a number of different outfits, his classic look is a classic for a reason.
