By his very nature, Loki is a trickster and is constantly taking on new identities and titles. But his latest title as the God of Stories may have major implications for the Marvel Universe. As someone who is a master of lies, Loki has made it his goal to free himself from his own destiny, and this title gives him a jump on his ultimate goal.
Loki is one of Marvel’s most popular villains because of his unpredictable nature. As the God of Trickery, Loki has constantly been re-inventing himself and trying to figure out how he can use manipulation to get what he wants. But as a god, his power over trickery and manipulation doesn’t just stop at fooling people. Loki’s newest title as the God of Stories demonstrates that he’s capable of fooling destiny itself.
Loki has had a long history in comic books. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, he was the very first Avengers villain, and he’s popped up in Marvel’s comics for decades. While usually a foil for his brother Thor, he’s been an enemy to pretty much anyone who gets in the way of his goals. While his time as the God of Trickery and Mischief is long, it’s finally come to an end, and it might just change everything about the future of Marvel Comics and the heroes within that universe.
Before He Was the God of Stories, Loki Seemed to Be Destined to Be a Villain
Loki Has Been a Villain Since His First Appearance
Loki’s turn into a villain started earlier when he was first adopted into Thor’s family. While it would be a dream for most kids to be adopted into royalty, Loki never got the same treatment as Thor did, which Loki could never really get over. Loki was resentful of the way the general Asgardian citizen valued strength and bravery above anything else. While Loki is certainly powerful, he’s strong in ways most don’t appreciate. While Loki’s command of magic could rival anyone’s physical strength, the average Asgardian only cared about seeing Thor leap into battle.

Is Loki Really Powerful in the Marvel Universe? The Evidence Is Clear
Loki has become an indispensable part of the MCU, and a fan-favorite protagonist, but how powerful is the character actually in Marvel Comics lore?
This resentment led to Loki plotting to become the most powerful sorcerer around and using his powers to defeat Thor, proving once and for all that Loki deserved all the attention and affection of the Asgardian people. His battle with Thor was Loki’s first step into villainy, and it has haunted his destiny ever since. No matter how much Loki tried to change over the years, it seemed that Loki was constantly destined to be nothing more than a monster. Eventually, however, Loki escaped this fate and became a new kind of god – one that wasn’t beholden by destiny’s plans.
Loki Tried Several Plans to Escape His Fate
Even Tricking Death Itself
Tired of constantly being shown as the villain, Loki hatched a daring plan to try and slip past the chains of destiny. Loki had intended to be reborn as Kid Loki, but his plans went awry. Trying to manipulate the fate of Asgard, Loki helped Norman Osborn invade Asgard, intent on returning it to the Nine Realms. This plan didn’t come to fruition, though, as he underestimated the power of the Sentry, who completely obliterated Asgard. Aghast at what had happened, Loki gave his life to help defeat the Sentry, even using his powerful Norn Stones to do it.
This sacrifice was Loki’s last act of redemption. The Sentry turned his attention to Loki and completely obliterated the trickster god. This defeat completely ruined all of Loki’s plans, as he intended to be reborn, but with his death, any new Loki would never be the same as the original. From here, Kid Loki grew up and went on several amazing adventures, completely free of his fate as a villain. But Kid Loki’s innocence didn’t last forever, as an echo of the old Loki’s spirit returned, still seeking to avoid the chains of fate and escape his destiny of being a villain.
During his Kid Loki era, Loki played a major role in the fan-favorite and critically-acclaimed Young Avengers series by Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie, available now both digitally and in collected editions from Marvel Comics.
Before he was killed during the Siege of Asgard, Loki manipulated Hela into taking his name out of the Book of Hel, meaning that he would nevertruly die, and he was now capable of returning as a spirit. This spirit was named Ikol by Kid Loki, who intended to keep his older self around, but never really trusted him. Instead, Kid Loki had sworn to never become like his older self and went on tons of adventures to save the galaxy, doing everything he could to earn the trust and love of everyone he came across. It seemed like it truly worked and that Kid Loki had become the hero that Ikol always wanted.
Kid Loki Was the Hero Loki Always Wanted to Be
Ikol Wasn’t Satisfied with Watching Someone Else Earn Redemption
This attitude was ultimately Kid Loki’s undoing. He had everything that Loki wanted: he was beloved, and he was free of being a villain. The internal tension within Loki’s character ultimately came to a head when, to destroy the Fear Crown, Kid Loki had to destroy his own mind. With his mind obliterated, his body was free for Ikol to take over, along with his reputation and new-found love of the people. With no other choice, Kid Loki agreed and allowed his body to be taken over by Loki’s more villainous spirit.
Loki realized that lies were nothing more than stories, and he could tell any story that he wanted.
It was a truly villainous act, but it was also fueled by Ikol’s decision that he truly wanted to change. Much later, when Loki was given the same choice – to either accept his fate as a villain or to sacrifice himself to save the world – Loki chose a third option. He realized that lies were nothing more than stories and that he could tell any story that he wanted. He could rewrite reality to fit his chosen narrative. At this moment, Loki truly became the God of Stories. This power allows Loki to retroactively rewrite history however he wants.
Loki Is Now Marvel’s God of Stories
He Can Rewrite Everyone’s History as He Pleases
Reality warpers have always been the most powerful characters in the Marvel Universe, and with Loki’s new powers as the God of Stories, he can edit history however he likes. By retelling an event, any details that Loki adds to his retelling will be rewritten into history itself. It’s an incredible power, and if Loki is truly serious about becoming a hero, it’s a power that he could use to fix the lives of everyone around him. Loki wanted to escape the bonds of being the God of Mischief, and now he’s become something more powerful. Now everyone is chained to whatever Loki says as the God of Stories.
