The following contains major spoilers for Avengers #22, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are officially staring down one of Spider-Man’s greatest loves — and adversaries.

Avengers #22 finds the eponymous team embarking upon an intergalactic mission to steal away with an archive of data once belonging to none other than Kang the Conqueror. While making their way into a cosmic auction house isn’t a problem for any of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, pulling off the heist they have planned won’t nearly be such an easy feat. This isn’t just because of the security the team is facing, however, but because of their competition, which just so happens to be comprised of Kang himself and his newest acquaintance — Felicia Hardy, better known as the Black Cat.

Felicia Hardy made her comic book debut as the Black Cat in the pages of 1979’s Amazing Spider-Man #194 by Marv Wolfman and Keith Pollard. The daughter of infamous cat burglar Walter Hardy, who himself was trained by his daughter’s future mentor the Black Fox, Felicia’s affluent life was thrown into chaos by her father’s arrest. Thanks to her incredible athleticism, Felicia had no problem keeping up with her fellow gymnasts and martial artists in her teenage years, yet her ambition and sense of adventure drove her to follow in her father’s footsteps as a master thief.

In her early years as the Black Cat, Felicia found a rival and romantic interest alike in the form of Spider-Man. Though the two were frequently at odds, there was a painfully obvious mutual attraction between the two, which kicked off what has become one of pop culture’s steamiest on-again-off-again love stories. Unsurprisingly, Spider-Man and the Black Cat have never really managed any sort of lasting relationship with one another, even if the pair do keep circling back around and giving things another try every few years.

The Eight Deaths of Spider-Man are Officially the Beginning of Mutantkind’s Next Great Downfall

One of the most underrated mutants of the latest generation has just unveiled how much damage the Eight Deaths of Spider-Man will really do.

Though Kang the Conqueror has long been one of the Avengers’ worst enemies, the team’s relationship with the time-traveling despot has become more complicated in recent years. This is due to Kang’s search for the Missing Moment, a singular point in time that is, for whatever reason, entirely inaccessible, as well as the emergence of Tribulation Events. These Tribulation Events have consisted of multiple major shake-ups to the Marvel Universe, such as the Ashen Combine’s assault on Earth and the attempted vampire takeover that played out in the recently concluded Blood Hunt crossover event.
