The Guardians of the Galaxy haven’t yet been confirmed to be returning to the MCU, making me worried that Marvel Studios might be quietly trying to move on from the iconic cosmic superhero team. Since their debut in 2014’s eponymous Phase 2 movie, the Guardians of the Galaxy team has been one of my favorite MCU properties. I loved seeing the team change and grow over the duration of the James Gunn-directed trilogy and Holiday Special, but, now, I’m nervous we might not see the Guardians of the Galaxy again.

2023’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ended with the original Guardians of the Galaxy team disbanding, though Rocket and Groot stayed in the new line-up, with the former being promoted to team captain. This was incredibly emotional, but also made me think the stage was being set for new Guardians of the Galaxy adventures, with a new roster continuing even after James Gunn’s departure from Marvel Studios. Over a year later, however, I’m worried about the Guardians of the Galaxy team’s future, especially after recent MCU casting news.

No Guardians Of The Galaxy Have Yet Been Confirmed For Avengers: Doomsday

Avengers: Doomsday Will Premiere In May 2026

I was thrilled when the Russo brothers were confirmed to be returning to Marvel Studios to direct Phase 6’s upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, especially since it was obvious this would be followed by some huge casting updates. While the most notable inclusion is surely Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, other MCU veterans, including Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell, will also be returning in Doomsday. Several MCU mainstays have also been confirmed to be returning, but the Guardians of the Galaxy team hasn’t yet been mentioned.

10 MCU Actors We Desperately Want To Return In Phase 6 After Robert Downey Jr & Chris Evans’ Avengers: Doomsday Castings

Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans have been confirmed to be returning to Marvel in Avengers: Doomsday, and many more MCU veterans could join them.

While I can’t wait to see the Fantastic Four, the Thunderbolts, Sam Wilson’s Captain America, Doctor Strange and Peter Parker’s Spider-Man in Avengers: Doomsday, I’m worried as the Guardians of the Galaxy team hasn’t been confirmed to be involved. The Guardians’ adventures have always been fairly separate to the main MCU timeline, though the team played a key role in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, so I imagined the same would be done in Doomsday and Secret Wars. We haven’t heard anything about the Guardians of the Galaxy team’s future, however, which has made me nervous.

Why It Would Be A Mistake For Marvel To Forget The Guardians Of The Galaxy

The Guardians Of The Galaxy Are A Key Part Of The MCU

I think it would be a huge mistake for Marvel Studios to move on from the Guardians of the Galaxy, let alone not include them in Avengers: Doomsday. The Guardians of the Galaxy have been one of Marvel’s biggest live-action surprises, as the team went from relative nobodies prior to their 2014 debut to being one of the MCU’s most popular and successful properties. Collectively, the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy has earned over $2.4 billion, which makes me think Marvel Studios would be out of its mind to let this hugely beloved franchise go.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 might have been the perfect ending for the original Guardians team, but the movie also set up a number of new adventures for the separate heroes. As well as establishing a new Guardians of the Galaxy team, Vol. 3 also hinted at new stories for Star-Lord, Mantis, Nebula and Drax, and the variant of Gamora. I would really love to see these stories converge in Avengers: Doomsday, allowing some iconic cosmic heroes to return to the MCU. So far, only one has been teased.

Vol. 3 Revealed The Legendary Star-Lord Will Return

Peter Quill has been teased to be returning to the MCU as the Legendary Star-Lord, thanks to an unexpected tag at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Chris Pratt is expected to return as Star-Lord, and may have revealed to friend and director James Gunn that he’s currently working with Marvel Studios, which gives me hope that he’ll be involved in Avengers: Doomsday. I would love to see Star-Lord as an Earth-bound hero in Avengers: Doomsday, allowing him to discover new layers to his character that he couldn’t among the Guardians of the Galaxy.
