The future of Norman Osborn in the Marvel Cinematic Universe gets an intriguing response from Willem Dafoe ahead of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man 4 sequel. As of this month, it has been three years since Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios got to celebrate three generations worth of Spider-Man in Spider-Man: No Way Home. While Holland is coming back to the MCU for the Spider-Man 4 movie, the door is technically not entirely closed for the other Spider-Man actors from the respective franchises.

In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, Dafoe was asked about what the chances are of him returning for Spider-Man 4, with Norman’s fate still up in the air after his final moments in Spider-Man: No Way Home. In terms of letting fans get a chance to see what happened to Norman after Spider-Man: No Way Home, Dafoe didn’t rule anything out, as he shared the following:

We’ll see. We’ll see [Laughs]. I could come back. Listen, Tom was great to work with and the whole series of Spider-Man films that I did were great fun. Great fun.

From Dafoe’s latest Green Goblin comments, it’s clear that the Marvel role is still something he loves exploring, with the gig being one of his most prominent credits in his incredible body of work. For many audience members, Dafoe is how they got introduced to Green Goblin outside the world of Marvel Comics, as his portrayal became one of the best aspects of Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man movies. That is why it was a major deal to see him as part of the Spider-Man: No Way Home cast, as Dafoe got to clash with Holland’s web-slinger.

It wouldn’t be shocking if Dafoe simply needed to see what the pitch would be to bring back Norman for Spider-Man 4, as there would have to be a very compelling story reason for his return to the MCU timeline. Given how big the stakes were in Spider-Man: No Way Home with all of the multiverse characters who got involved, there would need to be a good cause for any of them to ever get brought back again. Whether or not Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios are planning to use any of the actors again from Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man universes remains to be seen for the time being.

As great as it is to hear that Dafoe would be open to continuing playing Norman after the Spider-Man: No Way Home ending, there is a case to be made that his Marvel story has now reached a suitable ending point, especially with the former Green Goblin now having a second chance at life. Since the MCU has yet to introduce their versions of the Osborns, Spider-Man 4 and beyond could explore the option of introducing the Earth-616 incarnations, allowing new actors to step into the roles. Hopefully, as 2024 ends, more updates are on their way for Spider-Man 4.
