The following contains major spoilers for All-New Venom #1, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
The true identity of Marvel’s All-New Venom might just belong to one of the most cunning villains of all time.
Instead of any web-slinging or pulse-pounding action, All-New Venom #1 instead opens to the sight of an ordinary courtroom drama. Or rather, it would be ordinary if not for the fact that the one on trial is none other than Madame Masque herself. While that might seem like just where the longtime villain should be, the fact that she is one of the prime suspects in the case of Venom’s mysterious new host adds a layer of tension that could very well send the entire proceeding into abject chaos.

Introduced under the mysterious moniker of the Big M in Stan Lee and Gene Colan’s story, “The Coming of Whiplash!” from the pages of 1967’s Tales of Suspense #97, Whitney Frost was raised in a life of affluence and wealth under the watch of her dutiful father Byron Frost. Unfortunately, Frost was never truly Whitney’s father, but instead a proxy put into place by her true father, Count Luchino Nefaria, who hoped to mold his daughter into a “respectable” heir to his own criminal empire. When Byron lost his life, Nefaria came for Whitney to reveal the truth, leaving her deeply disturbed and overtly horrified by the situation.
Surprisingly, Whitney would ultimately join Count Nefaria after being abandoned by those she sought out for help, leading her to quickly come into her own as a criminal mastermind. Although she has stepped out of her father’s shadow in the decades since assuming her mantle as Madame Masque, she hasn’t necessarily played the role of an outright villain at every turn. In fact, Madame Masque enjoyed an extended romance with Iron Man at the height of her career, nearly securing for herself the chance to leave the life of villainy behind altogether in favor of something better.

An iconic mutant powerhouse is on the verge of joining S.H.I.E.L.D., and it could be the next big problem for a fan-favorite Marvel power couple.
Of course, escaping the supervillain lifestyle is never that easy, and before long Madame Masque was dragged back into the criminal underworld she called home. Only recently, Madame Masque made a major play for all of New York City during the events of Marvel Comics’ Gang War crossover event. Despite taking down the likes of Hammerhead and setting up every opposing force in the city for a fight they would never win, Madame Masque ended up losing much of her territory to Lonnie Lincoln, aka Tombstone, who became the de facto ruler of NYC’s criminal underworld in the wake of the Gang War she helped kick off in the first place.
