Thanos creator Jim Starlin offered his take on the use of artificial intelligence in art, a debate that has become a heated debate, as the consequences it will have for writers and artists remain yet to be fully understood. Starlin opened up about embracing A.I. in his comics. With many artists voicing concerns over AI’s role in art, Starlin offers a unique perspective on the largely polarizing matter.

In an interview with Popverse, Starlin disclosed that he will be using AI as a tool in his upcoming Dreadstar comic, which will be published by Monkey Wrench Press. As a comic author and artist, Jim Starlin mentions his use of AI art comes after a hand injury that rendered him unable to draw for four years, with AI assisting in his return to comics.

Starlin suggests embracing the use of AI is a matter of growing with innovation. In contrast, many artists have expressed increasing worries over AI art’s place in the creation of comic books.

Starlin Advocates Using AI To Assist Artists

In Starlin’s Popverse interview, he clarified his stance on AI, noting that he uses it as a tool in his art, rather than having AI create his comics for him. The integration of AI into everyday usage is a rapidly growing industry. and Starlin pointed out that fighting against the use of AI in art could inhibit innovation. Starlin carefully defined the boundaries of how he uses AI art to assist him in creating his comic book, explaining that:

I’m looking forward to seeing where it works itself into, because it’s going to be a tool. Trying to pass off an entire piece as your own if it’s an AI creation, that’s completely wrong. But I can see it being used for other things.

I want to try and use it in some of these future Dreadstar books, using it is as a little AI background. I come from Detroit, where the car replaced the horse-drawn carriage. I’ve always have tried to do additions to the medium. I do a lot of Photoshop work, you know, with photos and paintings, and other things in the backgrounds of Dreadstar already, and so I think the next step is just to see what I want to do with using some AI in the books.”

“.. I think a complete ban on the thing right now is a waste of time. You’re just setting yourself up in history is being another Luddite. I’m curious as to where it’s gonna go.

Starlin uses AI as a tool to assist him in creating assets for digital art, as well as an efficient method of editing paintings and images. While admitting to using AI in his upcoming Dreadstar vs Dreadstar comic, Starlin also commented on how he will note when AI is being used in the background of comic panels, and ensure he credits the AI engines used. While using AI art has been a contentious topic throughout the community, even appearing in DC’s Absolute Power event as a metacommentary, Starlin voiced his anticipation to discover how AI art evolves.

The Use Of AI In Comics, And Other Artist Mediums, Remains A Hott Button Topic Among Creators

Where To Draw The Line

AI art has been a widespread issue for the past few years due to its unregulated nature and its use of real art to train AI models without artists’ permission, with many artists viewing it as a form of art theft. Various artists have voiced their objections to AI art, such as Marvel comic book author, Daniel Kibblesmith, stating AI art “solved a problem that didn’t exist.” Amid the growing worry of many artists, both professional and recreational, AI art is largely untread territory, which will require proper regulation and boundaries to protect artists’ rights.

Robert Kirkman takes a firm stance against AI in the comics industry, fearing that an unregulated use of the technology threatens creators.

Though the growing concern of protecting professional artists’ livelihoods from AI is a real and substantial issue, Jim Starlin makes a noteworthy argument for using AI when it comes to artists with disabilities or injuries. Despite Starlin expressing his embrace of artificial intelligence in art, other artists fear AI will not stop its encroachment. As AI’s presence grows, only time will tell if artists and comic institutions like DC and Marvel Comics can find a way to make it a valuable tool, as the creator of Thanos has done with his own application of artificial intelligence.
