Battles between superheroes – it’s a classic trope from DC to Marvel, and Thor and Sentry are no exception. Because of the darkness within Sentry, the pure Thor has battled him several times, yet the winner varies depending on the context, with Thor on top here and Sentry as the winner there. The loser, however, sometimes suffers more fatal consequences, including death.

The God of Thunder is one of Marvel’s most powerful heroes, but so is Sentry, who is a tumultuous hero often lauded as Marvel’s version of Superman. Thor has been around for most of Marvel, first appearing in Journey Into Mystery #83 in 1962 by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and Jack Kirby while Sentry is a more recent addition to comics lore, first appearing in The Sentry #1 in 2000 by Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee.

Since Sentry’s arrival, he and Thor have clashed multiple times, as Sentry vies for Thor’s role of the most powerful Avenger and Thor continues to save the world from the threat of the semi-hero Sentry or as his other, darker form: the Void.

Thor and Sentry: Who Comes Out as the Strongest?

The God of Thunder vs the Dual Hero of Light and Darkness

With the power of one million exploding suns, Sentry’s power levels have not clearly been defined but often feared. Part of that fear is due to his other personality: the Void.

Thor is the God of Thunder hailing from the mythical land of Asgard. He’s the protector of humans and the realm of Midgard as well as a founding member of the Avengers. Well-loved for his MCU counterpart, he’s even more powerful in the comics where he has been able to stretch his powers to contain even a nuclear explosion. Sentry, on the other hand, is a ticking time bomb. With the power of one million exploding suns, Sentry’s power levels have not clearly been defined but often feared. Part of that fear is due to his other personality: the Void.

While Thor is the hero of comics, Sentry is a more complicated character. His own arch-enemy exists within his body as a split personality called the Void. As Sentry, he stands for the power of light and sun, while the Void, his dark half, reacts to his heroic feats with ones of darkness and malevolence. There is a darkness inside Sentry that isn’t in Thor, and outside their clashes, Sentry already has some experience with ripping apart a god.

Thor’s First Battle With Sentry Ends in Death

Sentry’s Void Form Is No Match for the God of Thunder

One of the most famous battles between Thor and Sentry happened during the events of Siege by Brian Michael Bendis and Olivier Coipel. In this culmination of the Dark Reign storyline, Norman Osborn and his Dark Avengers launch a full-fledged assault on Asgard, and it’s up to the Avengers to save Thor’s homeland. Sentry, however, decimates Asgard in the form of the Void in such a way that it takes all the heroes of Marvel to pull him back to his human self as Sentry, with the powerful Thor at the head of the charge.

Thor fights a difficult battle, but in this first encounter, he comes out on top against the psychologically troubled hero. Sentry is defeated and begs for death, and Thor obliges, charring him to skeletal remains with a lightning blast. This feat solidifies Thor as more than just a god, because Thor didn’t just battle another superhero – he battled the Void, who Norman Osborn was convinced was the Angel of Death unleashed. Even in an alternate timeline, Thor comes out on top, as in What If? Secret Invasion by Kevin Grevioux, Karl Bollers, and Pow Rodrix, which sees Thor snapping Sentry’s neck to end the battle.

Sentry Gains an Upgrade and a Gruesome Win Against Thor

But Thor Comes Back Victorious in Another Rematch

Sentry, however, has his comeback. Fans are waiting for Sentry’s awaited MCU debut, with fanart indicating a rematch between Thor and Sentry, but in their comic rematch, Thor didn’t come out on top like last time. In Uncanny Avengers #9, by Rick Remender and Daniel Acuña, the Sentry is resurrected and infused with the Celestial Death Seed as the Death Horsemen of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. With new powers and no longer restricted by the Void since his death, Sentry became a sudden god and showed Thor his newfound skills.

Sentry in his ultimate form absolutely leveled Thor, leaving him behind in the dust. Thankfully, they got a rematch in Black Panther and the Agents of Wakanda #2, by Jim Zub and Lan Medina, where Sentry is seen in a new merged form. Finally, he had figured out how to merge his solar self with his void self making him more powerful than ever before. Yet Thor, with a little help, brings this Void Sentry to his knees and eradicates the darkness within Sentry, for a little while, at least. With this battle, Thor’s wining scores rises back up.

Thor Has Defeated Sentry Three Times

The God of Thunder Is Stronger Than Sentry and the Void

Thor may be one of the most powerful Avengers, but he has some competition when it comes to Sentry. Yet s of right now, Thor still comes out on top with three wins versus Sentry’s one win, and that win was due to the power of the death seed, which was completely out of Thor’s control. If they clash again in the future, it’s any fan’s guess as to who will come out the final victor. But if history serves as any indication, Thor will come out on top and beat Sentry.
