The newest member of the Avengers has officially been confirmed, in the form of Elektra’s Daredevil. Ever since reuniting with his former lover in her on-panel comic debut, Matt Murdock has been trying to redeem the former assassin. Now it seems confirmed that her recent adoption of the title and role of Daredevil, the Woman Without Fear marked the official transition from Elektra being a conflicted anti-hero, to a full-blown superhero.

Marve’s “Next Big Thing” panel at New York Comic-Con 2024 reveals Marvel’s new line-up of vertical Infinity Comics coming to Marvel Unlimited, beginning with Astonishing Spider-Man (the first two issues are available now to readers for free). Astonishing X-Men will follow in December 2024, while Astonishing Avengers will arrive in January. And as the official artwork reveals, the trio of heroes underneath the Astonishing Avengers graphic are Captain America, She-Hulk, and most surprisingly, Elektra.

Captain America is obviously an Avengers staple, while Jennifer Walters recently rejoined the Avengers. But given her comic book history, Elektra makes a shocking, but nevertheless earned addition to The Avengers.

What Elektra Joining The Avengers Means For Her Future

The Daredevil Comics Turned The former Assassin Into A Steve Rogers Ally

Elektra was introduced to the comics in Daredevil #168 as a former college lover of Matt’s turned hitwoman in adulthood. The natural Catholic urge to better the people around him compelled Murdock to try to convince Elektra to turn over a new leaf. The longer they stayed together, the more that Matt’s better qualities would rub off on Elektra, which would be essential for her to complete her turn to good. This was most evident during the recent “Gang War” arc, where Elektra confirms she applies a no-kill rule to honor her boyfriend’s mantle.

In a short time since adopting the Daredevil mantle, Elektra has not only proven herself better than Matt Murdock, but NYC’s ultimate protector.

As Daredevil: Gang War continues, it becomes evident that Elektra is genuinely trying to be a better person, and a legit hero. When she fails to save someone’s life, it eats Elektra up inside, proving to be an even bigger burden than killing for her. Her hero’s journey continues in Daredevil: Woman Without Fear, where she feuds with the new Punisher and puts a modern twist on the original’s dynamic. Marvel has spent the past few years pushing Elektra harder into the hero spotlight, and this induction into the Avengers makes that push harder to ignore.

Our Take on Elektra Becoming An Official Avenger

Elektra Has Become Her Own Kind of Hero, And Fans Watched Every Step

In the most recent pages of Marvel Comics, fans have seen Elektra’s iconic romance with the original Daredevil come to an end, but the breakup has even more significance in light of this news (and vision for Marvel’s plans). Separating Elektra from Matt Murdock could be Marvel’s way to finally let Elektra stand on her own without being so tied to her past.

Elektra is having adventures of her own at this point, and joining the Avengers gives her even more missions and adventures to take on outside of Matt’s own books and stories. In the process, giving her prominence and significance beyond him. The OG Daredevil’s time with the Avengers helped bolster his prominence as a top hero, and Marvel can achieve the same with Elektra.

Astonishing Avengers arrives from Marvel in January 2025.
