Key Takeaways
From classic voices like James Arnold Taylor to newcomers like Nadji Jeter, each actor adds something special to the role of Spider-Man/Peter Parker.
Spider-Man’s popularity in video games has been maintained by the exceptional performances of voice actors like Yuri Lowenthal, who have truly embodied the character.
Few superheroes can boast as robust and lengthy a video game presence as Spider-Man. If he’d tapped out after delivering pizzas to an increasingly chaotic rendition of Funiculi, Funicula, he’d already have been a legend. But that train continued rolling.
The Different Actors Who’ve Played Spider-Man’s Main Characters
Many versions of Spider-Man have swung onto the big screen, but how many actors have portrayed the web-slinger’s main characters in movies?
That popularity may not have persisted as well without the surprising number of voice actors playing the webhead. For well over 20 years, Spider-Man has enjoyed voiced roles in video games. But which actors have arguably embodied him the best? We take a look.
9 James Arnold Taylor
Spider-Man/Peter Parker
Best known for voicing Tidus in Final Fantasy 10 and Ratchet in the Ratchet & Clank games, James Arnold Taylor seems perfectly suited to Spider-Man. His eternally youthful voice just begs for spidery banter, and several games have recognized that.
Taylor can notably be heard in 2007’s Spider-Man: Friend or Foe and 2013’s Lego Marvel Super Heroes, with a couple of other appearances as well. But it’s honestly surprising he hasn’t played the friendly neighborhood video game protagonist more often. Maybe after the next Ratchet & Clank.
8 Dan Gilvezan
Spider-Man 2099
Sometimes it’s nice to go back to the basics. Other times, the basics could use a twist. That’s what happened when Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions brought in Dan Gilvezan to play Miguel O’Hara aka Spider-Man 2099.
Every Spider-Man Animated Show, Ranked
Which is the best animated show of the web-slinging hero?
If that name doesn’t sound familiar, Gilvezan was the original voice of the hero in the 1981 animated series Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends. While his classic vocal stylings don’t work for Spider-Man’s more modern vibe, bringing him back as the more mature 2099 was an inspired choice.
7 Robbie Daymond
Spider-Man/Peter Parker
Robbie Daymond is no stranger to video games, boasting an incredibly robust voice acting resume both in and out of the medium. Though in recent years, you likely heard him as Goro Akechi in Persona 5 and Tianyou Zhao in the Like A Dragon games.
As for Spider-Man, Daymond only really had a couple of goes at the role in the video game field. This includes 2018’s Marvel Powers United VR, but more notably, 2017’s Marvel Vs Capcom Infinite. His youthful voice matches Spider-Man’s energy perfectly, almost sounding like a mix of the character’s most popular voice actors.
6 Josh Keaton
Spider-Man/Peter Parker
Josh Keaton is no stranger to the video game voice acting world. He’s arguably best known for playing Spider-Man, but you may also recognize his charismatically cocky voice as Tony Stark/Iron Man in Marvel’s Midnight Suns and Avad in Horizon: Zero Dawn and Horizon: Forbidden West.
Which Marvel Games Are The Best?
There are so many Marvel games out there now, but which ones stand above the rest?
His most recent times in the booth as the web slinger himself came in Spider-Man: Edge of Time and Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3, both in 2011. 2010 also saw him as Amazing and Ultimate Spider-Man in Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions. His range from the smarmy Tony Stark to the energetic Peter Parker is downright impressive.
5 Christopher Daniel Barnes
Spider-Man/Peter Parker And Spider-Man 2099
Christopher Daniel Barnes voiced the hero himself in the 1994 animated Spider-Man series. But he really made his name voicing The Little Mermaid’s Prince Eric, a role he’s played regularly since 1989, even including Disney Dreamlight Valley and Disney Speedstorm in 2022 and 2023, respectively.
Aside from the animated series, Barnes has voiced the symbiote version of Spider-Man in 2013’s free-to-play Marvel Heroes and took over for Dan Gilvezan as Spider-Man 2099 in Spider-Man: Edge of Time. His deeper voice adds a hint of experience to the role, which really helps with 2099.
4 Nadji Jeter
Spider-Man/Miles Morales
Relatively new Spider-Man Miles Morales hasn’t had nearly as much presence in video games as he deserves, but what he’s had so far has hit super hard thanks to the vocal performance of voice actor Nadji Jeter. Obviously, more people deserve a crack at the role, but it’s hard to imagine anybody else playing Miles at this point.
The Best Suits In Spider-Man: Miles Morales
Spider-Man: Miles Morales lets players choose from a wide variety of suits, but while some really grab your attention others are pretty mediocre.
Jeter absolutely kills it as Miles in Insomniac’s three Spider-Man games and also lent his expertise to the character in 2019’s Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order. But his video game debut was actually as Sam in The Last of Us, proving he can make you cry in any context.
3 Sam Riegel
Spider-Man/Peter Parker
Voice actor Sam Riegel is as voice actor as a voice actor can get. Not only is his resume gigantic, but he also regularly joins his fellow voice over artists in beloved Dungeons & Dragons series Critical Role.
As for Spider-Man, Riegel actually served as the replacement for Andrew Garfield in the video game adaptations of the Amazing Spider-Man movies. Unlike most voice doublers, he actually made the role his own, and despite the middling reviews of the games, he kind of nailed it. Not bad for a one-timer.
2 Rino Romano
Spider-Man/Peter Parker
Aside from his satisfyingly alliterative name, Rino Romano also maintains a respectable voice acting resume. While not a super dense list, its recent entries include Uncle Tony in The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Reiji Ishioda in Yakuza: Like a Dragon. He also played the male voice of Revan in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
But Romano’s arguable claim to fame is his time as Spider-Man in some of the character’s earliest voiced video game roles. Notably, you can hear him in Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro for the original Playstation, his performance setting the stage for many of Peter Parker’s later portrayals.
1 Yuri Lowenthal
Spider-Man/Peter Parker
Not only is Yuri Lowenthal one of the most well-known Spider-Man voice actors, he’s also easily in the top few most prolific voice actors in general. He recently appeared as Johnny in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Smoke and Adam in Mortal Kombat 1, but if you’ve played a video game, you’ve probably heard him.
You definitely know the eternally teenage-sounding Lowenthal as the arguably flawless voice of Spider-Man in Insomniac’s games, but he’s been voicing the character much longer than that. Aside from those and Marvel’s Midnight Suns, those games include 2014’s Spider-Man Unlimited and 2011’s Marvel Super Hero Squad Online.
