WARNING! Spoilers for All-New Venom #5

It’s no secret that Marvel Comics houses some wild superpowers, but its latest addition to that line-up may be the weirdest yet. MODOK has unveiled a brand-new ability that puts a gross spin on telekinesis and redefines what he’s capable of. Even after all this time, Marvel isn’t afraid to shake things up with the powers it gives its characters, and MODOK is proof of that fact.

All-New Venom #5 by Al Ewing, Carlos Gómez, Frank D’Armata, and Clayton Cowles pits the mysterious new Venom against MODOK in a no-holds-barred brawl. Venom may have the upper hand in raw physical strength due to his large form, but MODOK isn’t afraid to fight dirty…in a surprisingly literal sense.

Out of nowhere, MODOK attacks Venom with what he describes as “telekinetic nostril beams”. Eye beams are commonplace, but beams that shoot out of one’s nose are a different story entirely, and MODOK’s bizarre new upgrade shows how creative Marvel is willing to get with its superpowers.

Marvel Is Full of Odd Abilities, But This One Takes the Cake

When coming up with superpowers, most tend to assume that they’re all as cool as the iconic ones that have permeated pop culture over the years, like Hulk’s immense strength or Captain America’s serum-induced strength. However, not every character in the Marvel Universe has enviable powers at their disposal, as plenty of abilities range from being considered outside-the-box in a creative way to being thought of as downright weird. Beyond MODOK and his newfound nostril beams, there’s a vast selection of Marvel characters in the comics whose unique powers are a far cry from the usual fare.

Marvel Confirms MODOK Is Its Most Despicable Villain (Despite His Goofy Appearance)

MODOK has a reputation for being the worst, but in Fall of the House of X #2, he shows just how vile he really is, cheering on the deaths of mutants.

One notable example of a more unusual superpower is Squirrel Girl’s ability to control squirrels, just as her name suggests. She’s used this skill to take down foes as menacing as Doctor Doom, yet she nonetheless isn’t taken seriously by many who aren’t as familiar with her due to the reputation that a rodent-based power brings. Additionally, ForgetMeNot’s mutation causes him to be forgotten whenever someone looks away from him, turning the X-Man into an accidental master of stealth. Marvel has populated its comics with wacky abilities for a long time, so MODOK’s power is in line with the franchise’s old habits.

MODOK’s Bizarre Ability Proves That Marvel Isn’t Afraid to Get Weird With Its Powers

Marvel Doesn’t Always Need to Be So Serious, Even With Villains

Comics used to thrive on being a goofier medium, but with time, they’ve become more serious. This seriousness isn’t necessarily a bad thing, though it does mean that Marvel has become less zany than it was in the past. With that said, MODOK’s hilarious power shows that the charm of classic comics still remains despite the evolution that’s taken place. As great as grounded stories can be, there’s no harm in adding wacky superpowers to the mix. MODOK is as innovative as they come in terms of his abilities, and more Marvel characters should follow his example and experiment with their powers to keep readers on their toes.
