Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors

By the time Marvel’s five-hour announcement about the “Avengers: Doomsday” cast was done, there was a surprisingly long line of empty chairs. But as long as the cast list is, we can’t help but notice some huge absences from the roster, including some names we thought were practically mandatory.

Here, in no particular order, are the 5 biggest and most disappointing absences from the “Avengers: Doomsday” cast announcement.

5. Hugh Jackman

The absence of Hugh Jackman’s name from the cast list was surprising for a couple of reasons. First, when you consider all of the Fox “X-Men” actors cast in the film and the fact that Jackman’s Wolverine was the main character of those films, his involvement seems like a given. Second, because of the events of last year’s “Deadpool & Wolverine,” his character is one of the very few heroes out there who’s actually dealt with the kind of multiverse crisis that “Avengers: Doomsday” is gearing up to be.

4. Mark Ruffalo

We haven’t seen Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner/Hulk on the big screen since the end credits for “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” and we haven’t seen him in a live-action Marvel project at all since “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.” He isn’t dead, retired, or in space like some of the other OG Avengers, and he’s one of the smartest men on Earth. You’d think with whatever is going on in “Avengers: Doomsday,” he’d want to be around to help.

3. Ryan Reynolds

Sure, Deadpool may have entered the MCU in “Deadpool & Wolverine” but we still haven’t gotten to see him interact with any of Earth-616’s heroes. His character’s also from the same reality as all the Fox X-Men, and like Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, you would think they’d want him on board. Or are they saving them both for “Avengers: Secret Wars?”

2. Charlie Cox

On one hand, Charlie Cox’s Daredevil is a street-level hero and dealing with whatever multiverse crisis is happening in “Avengers: Doomsday” might be above his pay grade. On the other, with “Daredevil: Born Again” being the big Marvel project right now, it’s kind of tough to not imagine what it would be like to have ol’ hornhead in the MCU Avengers.

1. Tom Holland

It was particularly disappointing to see Tom Holland’s name left off the cast list of “Avengers: Doomsday.” Love him or hate him, Peter Parker’s story was one of the most important of “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame.” Hopefully his name will be added to the “Doomsday” cast later, or he’s being saved for “Avengers: Secret Wars.”
