Yesterday’s 5-hour long announcement for the massive cast of next year’s “Avengers: Doomsday” included a lot of what we expected and a lot we did not. In particular, the casting of so many actors from Fox‘s first “X-Men” films was a shocker.

5. Lewis Pullman
Lewis Pullman’s name was at first surprising simply because a lot of viewers likely had to look up exactly who he was in the MCU.
But then it probably still was a bit of a shock considering who he’s playing: Bob, aka The Sentry in “Thunderbolts*.” The announcement means Bob will presumably survive the events of “Thunderbolts*,” which wasn’t a given.
Bob has a split personality in the comics and his own “other guy,” is the malevolent and incredibly powerful The Void. Hints from the most recent trailer pointed toward Bob being the villain of the piece, suggesting his teammates might have to put him down.
4. Kelsey Grammer
The appearance of Kelsey Grammer’s name was a bit of a shocker because he’s only appeared very briefly in the MCU – in a post-credits scene he plays Hank McCoy/The Beast in “The Marvels.” But considering a lot of negative reactions to that film, his return wasn’t necessarily set in stone.
He was also the very first of the “X-Men” actors revealed in the announcement.
3. Ian McKellen
McKellen’s name was a surprise because his name was the first of the X-Men cast who had not yet shown up in the MCU. Grammer was in “The Marvels” and Patrick Stewart was in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” But McKellen was the first actor announced who had yet to appear in any MCU project. His name was the first sign that the appearances of Grammer and Stewart weren’t outliers, but that there would be a whole bunch of X-Men in the film.
2. Alan Cumming
Even after it was clear that “Avengers: Doomsday” would star a bunch of the OG X-Men, Cumming’s name was a surprise. The actor played Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler in only one of the Fox films, “X2: X-Men United,” reportedly because he did not get along with the rest of the cast. Apparently either he’s mended fences or isn’t as concerned with making friends these days.
1. Channing Tatum
Tatum’s inclusion in the “Avengers: Doomsday” cast was one of the most welcome surprises of the 5-hour announcement. Sure, Gambit is an X-Man, but Tatum never had the chance to save the world alongside the other “X-Men” actors on the big screen. At least not until now.
